It was still strange for Emerson, walking into Sophie's house as if it was his own. It had been a whirlwind week in New York, finding food suppliers, looking for the right decorations for the restaurant, and avoiding calls from home on his cell. He knew that Brynn was probably pissed at him for leaving without a word again, but it had all happened so fast.  He wasn't ready to deal with that, but the moment that he got off the plane in Tree Hill, he knew that it was only a matter of time before he ran into her. 

He walked almost silently through the kitchen, up the stairs and into one of the huge guest bedrooms that served as his own sanctuary for the moment. He threw his bags onto the bed and the flopped down himself, running a hand through his hair. It had been a long week of sleeping in a hotel room only feet away from Alex and he was so happy to be back in his own bed. He curled up, enjoying the feeling of the silk sheets against his skin before he felt his phone buzz in his pocket. 

He ignored the cellular device, enjoying the cool air conditioning that made his skin pimple with goosebumps and the soft mattress. He reached over to his side table, grabbing the remote and turning on the stereo. Soft jazz filled the room and Emerson sighed happily. This was what he'd been looking forward to for days upon days.  He needed just a few more minutes to lay here in the one place that he felt like things weren't constantly falling apart. 

His phone buzzed again, and he rolled his eyes as he fished it out of his pocket. Two messages from Summer. It was like the girl had telepathy. "Are you home!?" one read. The other said "I'm on my way to your house, loser." And just like that, his door burst open and his best friend was launching herself onto his body. He groaned in pain as she kneed him in the stomach. "I missed you too, Ev," he said weakly. 

She didn't say anything, just curled up next to him, her head landing in the crook of his arm. This was how he liked his room best. His best friend beside him, no words needed. Life was good.
