Not even sure how to write this post, and hoped we wouldn’t have to do so for a long, long time. Our beloved Judy Hei Hei has crossed the rainbow bridge. Her human mama fed her last night and put her back with the special needs birds. Upon going to put her to bed (in the house due to the cold), she had passed away. It seems some of her food from dinner had backed up into her lungs and stopped her breathing. We tried CPR but she was already gone. We are beyond devastated. Judy came to us from a backyard chicken breeder who hatched her in an incubator, trying to get a “lavender” colored chicken. She required daily care and couldn’t eat on her own due to her deformed jaw, beak, and skull, so the woman didn’t want to care for her. We took her in at less than a week old and have fed her on our laps multiple times a day ever since. She has gone on road trips with us and has spent time in the house with her dog uncle, George. She has been a friend to countless other chickens who were sick or disabled and a mother figure to Puddles, our special needs duck. She has been an incredible ambassador to hundreds of people who learned to view beings with disabilities in a different light and to realize animals that culture tells us are food, are just as deserving of love and life as cats and dogs. Life without Judy will be different. Emptier somehow. But we know she is always with us and will continue to inspire us to help those who the rest of the world has forgotten.
