Walter McAfee Walter McAfee was an African American astronomer, mathematician, and scientist. Notably recognized as the first person to calculate the speed of the moon. McAfee is also known for participating in the world's first lunar radio echo experiments with Project Diana. In the 1940s McAfee went to work for a theoretical studies unit within the U.S. Army Signals Corps. The unit's purpose was to bounce a radar signal off the Moon's surface, this study would prove that it was possible for a high-end frequency signal to penetrate Earth's ionosphere. Without the scientists knowing the exact speed of the Moon, all previous attempts failed. McAfee then made the necessary calculations to ensure the signal could bounce off the Moon, and on January 10, 1946 , the team released a signal from a special antenna. Seconds later, they received a small echo, undoubtedly confirming that communication with a spacecraft on the Moon was possible. Sadly McAfee's accomplishments were not acknowledged until the project's twenty-fifth anniversary in 1971. McAfee was inducted into the Wiley College's Science Hall of Fame in 1982, where he later founded a math and science fellowship to encourage minority interest in those subjects. #BlackPride #BlackLove #JuiceBlogConnection #NeverForget #BlackSuccess #BlackHistory #BlackKnowledge #BlackNews #WalterMcAfee #BlackScientist
