How do you think everyone in H2O celebrates Earth Day?

bella: i have a headcanon that she’s vegan, partially for environmental reasons, and to celebrate earth day she makes vegan “gelatin” treats for her friends that are shaped like trees

emma: is very environmentally conscious, as is the rest of her family. only rides her bike instead of driving for the entire week. elliot is trying his best, but she snaps at him when he leaves the faucet running while brushing his teeth

cleo: goes to the beach and cleans up the coast so plastic doesn’t harm the turtles and other marine life

charlotte: goes to her favorite botanical garden and paints it for several hours

rikki: kind of ambivalent about earth day, but decides to turn off the lights when she’s not using them. spends the day on mako island to appreciate nature

nate: has never heard of earth day before, but when he stumbles upon a climate protest, he realizes that there are actually a lot of Ladies™️ in environmental activism. he decides to stick around at the protest, starts serenading them with an improvised song about the earth, and somehow gets a few numbers

byron: celebrates earth day on the wrong day because he’s confused. his celebrations consist of listening to the “vibrations of the earth” while stoned

sophie: actively opposes earth day and thinks climate change is a hoax

You know, sometimes I wonder what would've happened if Lewis was in the moon pool with the girls and became a merman.

Like do you think he would enjoy it? Or what his reaction would be like?

Would he conduct experiments on himself too along with the girls?

Idk, I'm just wondering here.

many fanfic authors have tried to answer that question (a recent one on ao3 comes to mind), and i totally see why! i understand why it was never included in canon—the archetype of a non-magical ally to the girls was essential—but merman!lewis absolutely fascinates me.

i definitely think he’d have a hard time with it, but maybe he’d enjoy it more than the girls (from a scientific standpoint)? i think he’d 100% conduct experiments on himself and would dedicate too much time to it (because the barrier of having to ask the mermaids for samples wouldn’t exist), and maybe the girls would have to persuade him to take a break 💀

now, if he were to become a merman after the girls did… i think the dynamic would be so interesting. the girls would show him the ropes of being a mermaid and would quickly accept him as one of the merms (as he’s been their best friend for a while). but perhaps it would create relationship problems with clewis because they’d spend even more time together than before, and cleo might want some space. idk.

Some days, I think of my AU where Charlotte, Miriam, and Sophie are mermaids since season 1 (Sophie moved early, in case you're wondering) and I can't help but wonder about the group dynamics would be like if Bella were to come in. Any ideas?

tbh i think bella and sophie still wouldn’t get along, but i could actually see bella and miriam being great friends! their personalities would complement one another really well. and of course i think bella and charlotte would be the closest in the group :) the only question is, who would be the mermaid to leave (à la emma in season three) and what would that dynamic look like?

This is my own personal opinion, but as a writer, I think you really know a character once you see them get angry.

And not just the yelling, screaming, or silent type of angry (though those are great!), but at "show not tell" type of angry.

Like, look at Charlotte! She's both show and tell with her anger. But even towards the end, her anger isn't misplaced. How the girls and Lewis treated her. What she didn't know they were doing or saying behind her back (including basically attacking her mom). That's what I like about anger. It's what you see that the character wouldn't stand for that tells what that person is like.

And to be honest, it would have been beneficial to see Bella get angry. Get mad at Will's superficial attraction to her tail. To get angry at the girls in fights. To be hit on by Nate. To be catcalled.

The whole point of Bella is that we are lead to initially believing she tries to be the bigger person. That maybe she doesn't get angry.

But it would be a lot more telling if we'd seen a dark side to her, even if she herself wasn't aware it was there.

truthfully, i don’t think the writers would have ever let bella be assertive/get angry because, besides being a singer from ireland, her only character traits are being naïve and shy (basically cleo from season 1 but… less character development). i really don’t think we ever saw her get angry in a meaningful way, now that i’m thinking about it.

i would have LOVED to see her tell off will or nate at some point, though.

Honestly, it would have been one hot mess after another where the grandchildren are involved:

Broke: The current, new mermaids and the legacy mermaids/mermen would have never gotten along (for long).

Woke: The legacy mermaids/mermen already have a handle on their abilities & take the current, new mermaids under their wings to show them how to live with their secret easier.

Awakened: For all their similarities and differences, both groups are living in the 21st century and can forge new paths while learning from the past. By the end of the day, it's a learning process and all hands on deck not to get discovered.

very true!! does this include charlotte as a legacy mermaid? because i would have loved to see her exchanging magic tips with the girls instead of the writers making it a competition for lewis :(

What are your thoughts on Annette Watsford? Like her character, personality, and what ways she could have been used if Charlotte stayed on H2O?

annette is incredibly interesting—i mean, she runs her own restaurant, and she's got two former mermaids in her family. i also thought she seemed like a sweet lady, and cleo + rikki & emma really did her dirty when they used their powers against her in 2x06.

we don't really know much about her life, though, as she was underutilized on the show. like, who is charlotte's father? who is annette's father? (is it max hamilton?) did charlotte ever tell her that she (and gracie) used to be mermaids? it's all food for thought.
