Although Witcover writes from a Democratic friendly corner, the book is still objective noting the critiques, the verbal gaffes, that the "That's Joe" charisma about the man (it's worth pointing out that "Promises to Keep" entirely surpasses Clarence Thomas). Witcover details the growth of a politician, someone who got into the game young and utilized his errors in order to mature - you could easily set a tent-pole between the 1988 and the 2008 presidential run.
