A few hours later, after helping Eloise, Mabel decided to make a social call to Mrs. Law. Her home was lovely, and she invited Mabel in to meet the children, of which there were three.

“So nice of you to think of us, Mrs. Lee. My husband, Terrence, is out at the school right now, preparing for the week. Would you like some tea?” Julia’s demeanor was elegant and she spoke with grace, it inspired respect in Mabel.

“Thank you, yes, Julia. Any is fine.”

As Mabel was tidying up the sitting room, she heard a quiet knock at the door. It was almost hesitant, and Mabel couldn’t be sure she actually heard anything. She wasn’t expecting anyone, but she went to answer anyway.

At the door was a woman, her expression was apprehensive. Mabel approached her with a warm smile. “Good afternoon, I’m the lady of the house, may I help you?” Mabel introduced herself and the woman relaxed.

“Why, hello. Mabel Lee, yes? I’m a neighbor, Julia Law. I live in town and I learned that you have children? I just wanted to tell you that my husband is opening a school and you are more than welcome to have your children attend in the future.” Julia’s tone was chipper and Mabel took to her instantly.
