I watched omb season 2 and the episode with julia and monse I don’t understand how Monse got that if she’d been “whiter” her mom wouldn’t have left? Like it just didn’t make sense to me. I saw it more as Julia just being a shitty person. Of course her leaving her daughter because of that does make her a shit person but I was confused how Monse got to that conclusion.
Because there are hints throughout the episode. First of all, Selena changes her name to Julia when she gets to Brentwood so as to appear whiter. Secondly, the first thing we see Julia do when Monse is in her care is straighten her hair. Thirdly, she surrounds herself with whiteness, her new husband is white, her best friends are white, there are no black people or people of colour in Julia’s world and we’ve seen that black people also live in Brentwood and then there’s the fact that she lied about Monse’s dad being abusive, which plays into the ‘violent/dangerous black man’ stereotype. These are more like narrative clues for the audience that Monse then speaks out to tie it all together.
