Dear Grandma,
Things are going great here at the Academy. I know I haven’t written in awhile, but so much has been happening this year.
Guess what?
I get to be a sidekick!
I know you always say being a sidekick seems demeaning, but with my limited powers we knew it was kind of inevitable.
My counselor, Mr. Stevens, said Dr. Steele could take me on a mission over spring break.
I’m not sure you remember him, but Dr. Steele is the professor I’ve been staying with on the weekends since you went in to the nursing home. You’ve met him a couple times, but those were on your bad days.
Dr. Steele has always shown a special interest in me because we have similar powers – although the muscles in his whole body are like a giant spring, rather than just his legs like me.
You’d like him. He’s thoughtful and serious like Mom was, but always cracks a smile when I tell bust out one of the old jokes Dad used to tell to make mom smile when she was in one of her moods.
Our superhero names even go well together – The Bounder and Jumping Boy. Dr. Steele said I can change my name to Jump Man when I’m older.
As the scientist for the Centurions he has the most amazing lab. He said my aptitude for science and engineering are one of the reasons he hose me. He lets me help in the lab and we’ve been working on a bionic set of body armor for me to match his.
He’s the one that suggested I focus on Capoeira in during martial arts training, It complements my powers well and I love it. Using some of the twists I learned I can get across campus without ever touching the ground by bouncing off the buildings.
If m I do well on our first couple of missions, Dr. Steele said I can probably move into the Young Centurions compound this summer.
Me, a Young Centurion! I can’t believe it. Their leader is the top senior in the whole school. His names Peter, but he goes by Bolt. I’ve always liked him because he looks out for the younger kids instead of hazing them like some of the upperclassmen.
I’ve got to run because my unshackling class starts in a few minutes.
I hope things have gotten better in the nursing home. Dr. Steele said the staff probably isn’t stealing from you, but you just think that because of the dementia.
I can’t wait to see you in May.
Love,
Malcolm
