Drama #55:Nail Shop Paris (네일샵 파리스)
Year Aired: 2013
# Episodes: 10
Genre: Romance, Comedy, Supernatural
Synopsis:
Yeo-Joo (Park Gyulee) writes a love story on the internet about a fox with nine tails ("gumiho"). The story becomes a hit and Yeo-Joo becomes somewhat of an internet celebrity. Then, Yeo-Joo is caught in a plagiarism scandal. For her next story, Yeo-Joo decides to write about something completely new. For inspiration, Yeo-Joo decides to observe real people for her story.
Yeo-Joo goes to the subway station. There, she sees a man save a woman from a drug addict. The hero is Alex (Jun Ji-Hoo). Yeo-Joo thinks Alex would make for good material in her next story. She follows Alex to his place of work, which turns out to be a nail shop named "Paris". Yeo-Joo decides to work at the nail shop, but it appears the shop only hires men. Yeo-Joo then disguises herself as a man with the help of her friend Ji-Soo (Han So-Young).
My Thoughts:
I really thought I wasn't going to watch this drama because I was so over the girl disguised as a guy story. What brought me in was the lovely Song Jae Rim. In his previous dramas he had minor roles, but recently got a bigger role in Moon Embracing The Sun. He wasn’t the lead in that one though. So when I found out that he was a lead in this drama I decided to watch even if his character would be the second lead. This was a short, cute, quirky, and weird drama. What I loved is that I really couldn't figure out who the real lead was. I was Team Kay from the beginning but Bunny/Yeo Joo liked Alex from the beginning. For the first half I thought I had second lead syndrome, which I rarely get. I ended up liking this drama a whole lot more than I expected. I would recommend it as a something to watch when you need a quick break. Its only 10 episodes, and if I remember correctly none of the episodes are full hour long.
7/10 Star
After watching Nail Shop Paris, I can say that I liked it, but I also have to wonder why Bunny did not end up with Alex, because seriously, he was so handsome. So here is a picture of him to make you feel better. <3
Paris Nail Salon ♥ Reflections
Wow! I didn't see that coming! Talk about having your cake and eating it too! Each episode vacillates between the reality of Bunny's world and the fantasy of her Internet novel but it turns out that that the fantasy is the reality. It's not about who gets the girl since the girl gets both guys: Kay for this life, and if he can't make her human, Alex for eternity. How fun is that! They are all good friends and there is a cute little gumiho girl with a white cat in the mix.
Bunny and Kay's daughter's eyes glow red when she communicates with Hoya, the cat. She asks Dad to scold Hoya for calling her 'ugly'.
Grumpy sexy Kay was my choice for Bunny although Alex had more positive influence on her. She marries Kay and has a daughter but I don't understand why she killed him off in the novel and went with Alex into the light. Maybe she knows he will grow old and die while she remains unchanged.
Angelic Alex always makes the unselfish choice even when he knows Bunny likes him. Anyway, it's the best choice in the long run since he has less to lose that way. Alex never writes people off no matter what they do. He and Bunny are both half gumiho healers. I still don't understand why gumiho want to become human. Humans are so ordinary.
Cute, sweet Jin is the son of a shaman and can see spirits. Jin is the first to discover that Bunny is a girl when she comes out of the shower and drops her towel. He uses the info to get closer to her roommate who is Bunny's best friend forever (BFF). Jin likes cute girls who like cats and can fight. But he has to put her ahead of his fans.
BFF is supportive of Bunny in every way and full of fun. She and Jin are well matched but she has trouble resisting any guy who has a crush on her. That causes trouble when she gets sick and goes to the hospital and an Intern likes her. But she and Jin end up together.
First and last is the Boss of Paris Nail Salon who turns out to be Bunny's gumiho mom. I didn't really understand why she abandoned Bunny and her dad unless Dad didn't know he had married a gumiho. Still she watched over Bunny, protected, and manipulated things in the background.
This drama was fun, supernatural, artistic, short, and the best ending ever elevated it to my top three dramas, along with Flower Boy Next Door and Secret Garden. (Dating Agency Cyrano is still in the running.) Drama Fever.
