As we consider in today’s posts the length of time it takes female University of Iowa faculty to achieve full professor status, we turn to the illustrious career of Anthropology professor June Helm. Helm joined the UI faculty as an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Anthropology in 1960, and achieved the rank of Professor in 1966. Professor Helm served several stints as Chair of the Department of Anthropology, which she helped establish as a separate department, and she was also appointed Chair of the American Indian Native Studies Program. Her research focused on hunter-gatherers in the Mackenzie River basin region of the Canadian north.
