SION in June Projects

JUNE Projects
HAT _ ITEM(s)001-2021
So miraculously, two days before the end of the month, I’ve managed to decide on what projects I wanna do during June.
This is something new I’m trying: I love all my projects, but some are duds. It’s not the fault of the designer: rather, it’s the fact that sometimes… you just want to put a WIP down for a while. Being able to shift WIPs with systematic regularity is really wonderful.
For me, embroidery and cross stitch are my no-pressure crafts. While I love sharing what I’m working on, I’m also really trying to practice being okay with stopping a project. And so far… it’s been really, radically successful. It’s actually quite nice: I don’t often feel like I can “quit” things, but with my fiber arts stuff, I can. Learning –well, re-learning- how to quit has been a wonderfully healing thing. It’s taken away some of my anxiety about failure too.
That being said, I decided on my three projects for the month: at least for my two central projects for the month.
So… here they are:
Stitchynova’s Pastel Handhelds Sampler (Cross Stitch)
Stitchynova’s Floral Hiragana Sampler (Cross Stitch)
Stitchynova’s Pokeball Sampler (Cross Stitch)
(I included links so, naturally, if you’re interested or a fiber artist, you can check these out and see if they’re for you.)
I’ve done a lot of embroidery, so switching back to cross stitch feels really nice. I’ll still have embroidery because I’m expecting my next round of a subscription box, and am working on free-stitching a few patterns on some bags.
I chose these because I A) already own them and B) wanted to do things that are relative to this moment in my life.
In June, I’ll finally be picking up studying an actual Japanese textbook again after about… two and a half years of not studying Japanese systematically, at least not to a great degree.
Currently, I split my time about 80/20 right now: 80% speaking Japanese –and reading it, writing it on occasion, and listening to it- and 20% speaking English with friends, reading it on my phone or in a book, listening to it on Youtube, or in various situations. At work, I use it more because it’s my job, but outside my apartment and my office/school, I have to use Japanese. It’s lent to me obtaining a really high level of fluency in a very short time, though I’ll always be a student.
(Also... it’s rather fitting that I do my first sampler with hiragana, one of the basic writing systems for Japanese, isn’t it?)
I’ve never done a sampler, so I think it’ll be grand fun! It ought to be something that works up decently quick, and maybe something that by months end, I’ll have knocked out and ready to turn into a little framed piece.
I’ve also been thinking a lot about Pokémon, so doing a sampler of Pokéballs ought to be really fun. I think I might make it into a mini tapestry and hang it up somewhere: either that, or I’ll frame it.
Also, I’ll be finally using my stash of 100-yen store floss! The Pokéball pattern calls for 20 different colors, but I figure that I’ve got that -at minimum- in my ever-growing collection. I actually spent a good deal of time winding ever more floss into my container, so... I’m sure I can find plenty of colors in there to match to my balls.
And naturally, thinking about Pokémon makes me think about handhelds, which I’m extremely fond of. I’ve actually spent this last week playing my Switch almost daily: specifically, playing Yoshi’s Crafted World. It’s my first time experiencing one of the Yoshi games outside of let’s plays, and honestly, it’s so charming. If I were a felter, this would be paradise, but alas and alack, I’m both a gamer and a stitcher, haha.
All that to say that handhelds seemed like something fun to stitch this month too! (I’m bad at getting to my point quickly sometimes…)
I’ll be getting my materials tonight before I take care of adulating (always adulating) though I won’t be matching Stitchynova’s colors on the pastel handhelds. I’d like to do some sunny colors that don’t exist like yellows, oranges and pinks. That’s always such a wonderful color combination, isn’t it?
Anyways, I can’t wait to start creating in June! I think it’ll be a lovely month of really fun things to make. Thanks for reading: now go out and create!
