Norse Influences in Prétear

Bear with me on this one.

It's well-documented that Junichi Sato conceived the main plot of Prétear from the fairy tale "Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs." The twist being that the Snow White in this situation is a magical girl, and the seven dwarfs are actually seven knights (of average human height) who combine with her to give her powers to fight an evil villain named Fenrir, who sends out hordes of demon larvae to suck out the life force of the planet.

Something that always stuck out to me was that Fenrir's name is derived from Norse Mythology; according to the Prose Edda, Fenrir is a wolf, the son of Loki and Angrboda, who was imprisoned by the gods because Odin saw that he would someday bring about their doom. This is reflected in how the Leafé Knights sealed Takako/Fenrir away after she tried to steal all the Leafé and bring about destruction.

But is there more to this than just Fenrir's name?

Fenrir in mythology was bound in chains created by dwarfs. Again we see a parallel between the seven dwarfs the Knights were inspired by, and the dwarfs of Norse myth. (Side note: though "dwarf" has come to mean a little person, there's no indication in surviving Norse texts that dwarfs were universally small. However, there is evidence that magical beings like fairies and dwarfs were portrayed as little as Christianity took hold of Europe; a symbolic diminishing of pagan entities.)

Dwarfs also feature prominently in a myth about the goddess Freya. Freya was one of the Vanir, fertility gods who had domain over nature and life (contrast with the Aesir like Odin and Thor, who had ties more to war). Like Snow White, Freya ends up involved with dwarfs when they promise to give her a beautiful necklace for the price of being their wife/sleeping with all of them and... Okay, it's not a pretty story, but the association of a goddess that brings fertility and dwarfs is similar to Himeno and the Knights. Moving on...

The life force of Prétear is called "Leafé." Sato compared it to the poisoned apple in Snow White, which takes life away while a normal apple gives life. Norse Mythology also has life-giving apples; the golden apples of Idunn, which the gods of Asgard use to remain young.

"Leafé's" etymology is a headscratcher for me, and I haven't found anyone who's offered an explanation for it. But something occurred to me: Maybe it's derived from "Lif?"

In the Prose Edda, Lif--Old Norse for "Life"--is the woman who will survive Ragnarok with her partner, Lifthrasir ("Will to Live"). Their union will bring forth new life for the world, as they will give birth to the new human race. It's not too different from how the Prétear and the Leafé Knight combining together allows them to defend and generate new life that the demons have taken. (Admittedly, that's not much of a stretch; there's some old heteronormativity in there.)

And when Fenrir launches her final attack, what does she create? A giant tree that's a twisted vision of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. The same archetype as the Tree of Life, and numerous other trees in myths.

This is all speculation on my part, but it works too well to just be random.

The current kerfuffle over some Light Novel writer naming the main character of a new series “Latina” because he used AI to try to figure out a good sounding ethnic name makes me think of the exact opposite of that situation: Junichi Sato and his production staff going to Venice to try to faithfully present the idea of Venice in Aria, a series that takes place in the far future and on Mars.
