Art Event--Junior Review
Last Monday, April 8, 2013, I went to the opening of the Junior Review in the Foreman Gallery at Hartwick College. The show included work from all of the junior year art majors.
One of my favorite collections was the ceramics by Erica Cantwell. What I really like about ceramics is that the pieces are so beautiful but also functional. Each piece could be displayed purely as a work of art, or used functionally for tea or wine. Her artist statement spoke about how her style has evolved and become more mature over the years and found an artistic direction, which is something I really admire. It can be difficult to find a clear idea for your work. I especially liked the blue teapot and the wine vessels with the religious imagery.
Another collection of work that I really liked was Jemma Dendy-Young’s. Her show was very cohesive and I got the sense that she had a well-established aesthetic and brand. Her Starbucks cup project was awesome and I really like how it encourages people to challenge what they think they know about gender and sexuality. This is a topic that is really important to me. I am on the executive board for Hartwick Identity Alliance and so I spend a good amount of time trying to increase people’s awareness of gender and sexuality issues on campus, so it was great to see it in the show.
I was not fond of the show by Rachel Curtis. I liked her print with the daffodil, and her underwater scenes, but I really did not like the prints with the gloves. I didn’t like how they were displayed on the tree branch, and they reminded me so much of finger painting or those hand turkeys you make on thanksgiving in elementary school that I could not appreciate the message behind them. I felt like pieces in her show were not as unified as much of the other shows, and the way she displayed it did not allow the eye to flow smoothly over the work.
"I'm gonna get through this."
