What’s Changing for 19-Year-Olds in Junior Hockey

For decades, CHL players under 20 were required to return to their junior club unless they made an NHL roster. QMJHL DRAFT HAS CONNECTICUT CONNECTIONS

By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - The last of the Canadian major junior draft for the year, the QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League), was held on Saturday. In the primary portion of the draft, the first US-based draftee was taken 14th overall in the first round. With their second selection, the Rimouski Oceanic selected Tyson Goguen of Moncton, New Brunswick, of the Selects Academy program's U-16 team at South Kent Prep. Then from their U15 team, another South Kent prep player, Jabez Seymour of North River, Newfoundland, was also taken in the first round with a team's second pick, 18th overall, by the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. South Kent then had a third selection taken as Drew Allison, of Fall River, Nova Scotia, went in the fourth round (62nd overall) to Baie-Comeau with a pick initially held by the Saint John Sea Dogs. In the seventh round (129th overall), the Halifax Mooseheads took Michael Munro of the Avon Old Farms Winged Beavers. In the 11th round, Mike Mardula, from Weston, Connecticut, was selected from the Mid-Fairfield Rangers U-15 by the newly crowned Memorial Cup champion Quebec Remparts. Ex-Hartford Wolf Pack goaltender and AHL Hall-of-Famer, Jean-Francois JFF.) KEELEY: ADAMS-MOISAN RETURNS TO MAINE

Mariners get a big boost ahead of a key weekend BY: Michael Keeley, Maine Mariners  PORTLAND, ME – March 14, 2019 – The Mariners will add a key piece to their forward depth this weekend, adding forward Morgan Adams-Moisan back to the lineup, reassigned from the AHL’s Laval Rocket on Thursday. Adams-Moisan was recalled to the AHL for the second time this season on February 11th, and played in ten games for the Rocket, scoring one goal. The 22-year-old La Tuque, QC native is third on the Mariners stat sheet with 15 goals, most of which came in the months of December and January. After going his first 14 games without a goal, Adams-Moisan’s first pro tally on November 28th – a shorthanded goal vs. Reading, sparked a run of 13 goals in 17 games. He earned his first call up on December 11th but got into just one game before being returned to Maine on Christmas Eve. He picked up right where he left off with the Mariners, scoring 8 goals in 10 games upon his return. He scored his first career AHL goal on February 16th at Binghamton. Adams-Moisan is a first-year pro, signing with Laval after a breakout final year of junior hockey in the QMJHL with Drummondville. The 6’2, 215-pound forward has also been one of the Mariners’ leading enforcers this season, topping the team in penalty minutes (98). His re-addition to the roster along with 6’2, 220-pound Branden Troock (acquired at last week’s trade deadline from Atlanta), will add significant size to the lineup. The Mariners are in action Saturday when they travel to Worcester to take on Railers at 7:05 PM. They’re home on Sunday (Mar. 17th) when they host the Newfoundland Growlers at 3:00 PM for Beacon’s Birthday Bash presented by Evergreen Credit Union. KEELEY: MARINERS SIGN 6’4 FORWARD CHRIS ORDOOBADI

The sizeable rookie out of Neumann University joins Maine  BY: Michael Keeley, Maine Mariners PORTLAND, ME – March 5, 2019 – The Mariners added size up front on Tuesday, signing 6’4, 220-pound forward Chris Ordoobadi to an SPC (standard player contract). The 24-year-old Ordoobadi just finished up his college career at Neumann University (Aston, PA). Ordoobadi is a native of Washington, D.C. and played his last season of junior hockey in Canada with the NOJHL’s Elliot Lake Wildcats and Blind River Beavers. He played one year at Lawrence University (Appleton, WI), before transferring to Neumann before the 2016-17 season. In 43 games with the Knights, he totaled 10 goals and 8 assists. This season he registered 10 points in 17 games. Ordoobadi provides size to a relatively small Mariners roster which recently lost forward Morgan Adams-Moisan to recall as well as forward Louie Rowe and defenseman Brycen Martin to injuries. Ordoobadi will wear #11 for the Mariners. The Mariners begin a three-game homestand on Wednesday, hosting the Norfolk Admirals at 7:00 PM in a “sensory reduced game” as part of Autism Awareness Night.
