A dive at Florida’s Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse
The waters around the BLM-managed Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area are a designated critical habitat for the West Indian Manatee that share them with 800 species of fish from the freshwater tributaries out to the deep reefs. The adjacent Indian River Lagoon, a 156-mile estuary along Florida’s east coast, is perhaps the most biologically diverse estuarine system in the continental United States.
Many of the fish spend all of their life here, including important forage fish for higher-level predators. The estuary is also a fishery for commercial species such as the spotted seatrout, red drum, snook, tarpon and gray snapper.
Manatees are protected by the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act, which establishes the entire state of Florida as a refuge and sanctuary for manatees, and federally protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act.

Exactly one hundred years ago today, the Palm Beach Post reported “Jupiter, an enterprising community north of West Palm Beach, now has an inlet, replacing an old natural inlet and giving the best access to the ocean it has ever had.” The new inlet and its jetties were funded with bonds issued to the new Jupiter Inlet District.
