YO!! It’s you!
Why do ya look kinda erm... foggy?? Uh, weird-- I dunno, I kinda just...
I’m fine! The Gray Faces said I had fallen down but I don’t think that’s what happened? But everything is kinda dull and quiet and you’re the first other I’ve seen in a long while, yo! Waterfall isn’t always this quiet...

So here he was once again; the yellow hue of phosphorus light pouring into the hall from its large, stained-glass windows, mimicking – the skeleton guessed – the appearance of the fabled sun that existed on the surface.
How many times has he been here now? The marble, polished floor beneath his feet as he currently stared down toward the currently vacant opening leading into the area. Watching, waiting, bearing a sick knowing that the human would come through at any moment. That was the problem for Sans: it all seemed familiar to him, but he could never recount how many times the child had chosen this path. He remembered merely fragments; broken, repeated pieces like a bad dream. Sometimes he wished that’s all it ever was, even during the times when things didn’t seem so awful… but the data never lies. The skeleton emitted a defeated sigh, and resigned himself to lean on a nearby pillar while he waited. He pondered how many times he had questioned himself about what he was about to do, about the resets, the anomaly. How many incidents had he won? Perhaps even convinced the human to change their ways? How many times did he –? Sans shook his head clear before he could finish the thought. With so many inconsistent variables, he knew he couldn’t focus on his doubts at that moment. He had to be ready for them. He had to be ready to pass judgement on the human in their present reality. He could not see another way around it.
Sans didn’t have to wait for long.
The silence was broken by soft footsteps. The sound bouncing and echoing against the walls, announcing the approaching threat as the human turned the corner and calmly made their way down the rows of pillars.
They could still feel the dull ache of the wound that had killed them. Of the many wounds, of the many deaths, all blurring together.
If they tried very, very hard they could almost remember the first time. It had been Undyne. Probably. Frisk had been so scared (why was this happening why was she trying to kill them), only driven forward by the will to survive. And Chara... Hmm, it wasn’t important anymore. That had been back when they were still weak.
Now, they both knew exactly what they had to do. They had a purpose. It was all so obvious, why hadn’t they seen it before now?
Chara was throughly enjoying every kill since waterfall, no matter how easy the enemy victim had fallen. This world was at their mercy. A mercy that would not be offered.
But then, Sans had blocked their path.
Sans. How they had misjudged him. He was oh so weak, yet so strong. They had not been able to land a single blow on him. He on the other hand...
This is what they had been missing all along. Every broken bone, every death, it was all worth it.
It was exhilarating.
*Sometimes.
