And while leagues/teams take a break for summer, that doesn't mean individual players do. I have teenage hockey-playing son, nowhere near NHL or NCAA D-1 level, and the most consecutive days he was off the ice this summer was 4, when we were traveling. There's rat hockey ant skill sessions and all the elite camps and just talking your way onto the ice when it's not booked for an hour or two. None of this is required, but I would expect Jack, having internalized the message that hockey is everything would be doing all that and more, and telling Bob what I hear over and over. "I can't. I have hockey."

Yeah, pretty much. Jack has learned that hockey is more important than rest and relaxation; even if there’s a day when he’s eight and Bob says, “Screw it, let’s skip today and go fishing,” he has a sulky and resentful boy next to him who’s not having fun or trying to fish very hard; and when Bob pushes him on it, he explodes, “I should be doing hockey. I wish I never came. You’re so stupid.”

Because even then, Jack has an anxiety disorder and an all-consuming passion that are unhealthily intertwined.

So Bob learns that if he wants quality time, he has to get it with a hockey stick in hand. Which is great when it means he and Jack can spend time together, but toxic when it reinforces Jack’s equation of his father’s love and his success in hockey, because the first time he meets anyone his age who can really equal him (and therefore the first time he really struggles to be the best), he’s like 16 and away from home.

You know what I love? When writers add little behind-the-scenes tidbits in the end chapter notes in fics. Headcanons, an extra sentence or two of dialogue---a delightful little lagniappe that makes you smile. I'm rereading @justlookfrightened ’s Neighbors series again, and they included a link to a meal that Jack and Bitty made in their end notes, and it’s just like *happy sigh*
