Sam was beyond excited when he first found out that he had a younger brother. He wanted to be for Adam what Dean was for him. He wished he'd been able to teach him how to throw a football and tie his shoes, but what's done is done--

and he can be the best he can be right now.

Sam's always considered Adam part of the family, and he wants to get him as far away from them as possible because him and Dean will bring him down and cause him harm that Adam will never deserve.

He's another kid who got himself stuck in a war that really isn't his. He hates that Zachariah stopped him from warning Sam and Dean about the Windom incident, and he still holds onto the fact that if he could have warned them before they got the call from the ghoul, Adam would have never died to begin with. Chuck realizes Adam is probably a bit resentful about the prophet thing and that his death made a best seller, but he really wants to look out for the kid somehow.
