This tiny art-deco temple to the humble slider is truly manna from heaven. The White Manna in Hackensack, New Jersey dates to the late 1930s and has been here, on the banks of the Hackensack River, since 1946. It often ends up on lists for best burgers in America, had the imprimatur of Anthony Bourdain and enjoyed the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives treatment. There is so much to love here! Those little burgers — with sizzling onions and steamed bun — are cooked by the hundreds each day. The secret to the recipe I'd like to think is the state of mind the architecture puts you in — for me, it was more of a nostalgic trance, one I only reluctantly left. The White Manna is not to be confused with Jersey City's White Mana — yep, one N, thanks to a long-ago sign snafu — which is also rich in culinary and architectural heritage, and was once a sister restaurant, along with a few others that are now gone. Thank heaven we still have this Manna (and Mana) to enjoy! #retrologist #njspots #njshooterz #njisntboring #justnewjersey #ig_newjersey #jerseycollective #jerseygrammers #Just_NewJersey (at White Manna Hamburgers)
