To Serve or to Save?

ask-riven​ and I are having a fascinating conversation right now about the fact that Riven’s bio appears to have changed at some point within the last year without either of us noticing. Thanks to the magic of the Internet Wayback Machine I’ve been able to track down that at some point between July 26th and September 22nd of last year:

She shattered her sword -- severing ties with the past -- and wandered in self-imposed exile. Now she seeks atonement and her own way to serve the pure Noxian vision in which she believed.

I’d be amazed that nobody else seems to have noticed this before were it not such a small thing. I only noticed it myself because I wanted to refresh my memory of the phrase and found myself feeling as though it wasn’t quite what I remembered.

I can’t help but feel that this one minor change marks the difference between a Riven who simply wants to stay true to her ideals and one who wants to ensure that they outlive her. It’s certainly led me to reconsider more than a few things about the way I perceive her long-term aspirations and what kind of future would truly bring her happiness.

"How we met."

Piercing white eyes stare at Riven as the archer walks towards her.  The man, or at least the thing that resembled a man stops in front of the Exile, his baleful gaze not leaving her.

"Riven the Exile, you slaughtered my kinsmen, butchered my family and destroyed my home.  For that, I will kill you one day." he coldly declared.

"I fight for a better Noxus archer.  I will repent for my actions." she told him, meeting his gaze.

Varus did not flinch.  "Go and tell the dead bodies that.  They will forgive you more than I will."

"EVERYONE KEEPS TOUCHING ME AND MY KNUCKLES HURT FROM PUNCHING THEM."

He noted the woman’s composure, the words did not seemingly belong to the usual expressions of the Exile. He found himself with the label of “CONCERN.”

"PERHAPS YOU ARE AFFLICTED BY EXHAUSTION, OR A MAGIC PERHAPS? HUNGER? I DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAS HAPPENED, BUT YOU DO NOT SEEM TO BE OF A RIGHT MIND. PERHAPS YOU MUST REST. THESE ARE MERELY THINGS I SUSPECT THAT MIGHT CONTRIBUTE TO ERRATIC BEHAVIOR."

Blitzcrank finished, his eyes fixated on the woman. The concern in him lingered, the feeling now turning to “WORRY.”

Blitzcrank is given a PIECE OF HUMAN FLESH.

Looking at the odd item given to him, he analyzes the material, his eyes flickering on and off. Within 10 seconds, his eyes stop flickering, and what could be seen as a curious gaze was set upon the Exile.

"WHERE WAS THIS ACQUIRED? IT SEEMS TO BE OF HUMAN QUALITY. PERHAPS I AM TO ASSUME YOU HAVE ACQUIRED THIS FOR CONSUMPTION? I WAS NOT AWARE HUMAN CANNIBALISM WAS ONE OF YOUR TRAITS, EXILED BEING."

Don't chase the rabbit.

The sound of footsteps and the hum of energy. The whistle of machinery flying by. The smell of ozone, and the crackle of electricity.

The downtown streets of Piltover were an alien place for the boy, clinging to his father's side. The man, in his labcoat and his round spectacles, with his hand on his son's head, smile down at him, warm brown eyes speaking volumes in silence as his dark, flyaway hair did as it did best, and misbehaved. The boy's grey eyes flicked around the street, though they were always slower after they found his father's, and he always shook just a little bit less, at least for a time.

His one free hand clutched a tiny, vaguely cylindrical bit of techmaturgy, gleaming silver, with a small green gem inset in the crown. Occasionally, when he jumped at a loud noise or a sudden movement, he'd point the device at the source, though his father would be quick to chuckle and bring him back to ease.

The first time seeing the hustle and bustle outside the transport system had alarmed the man too. But for Take Your Child To Work day, he'd bring him the same route he'd always walked to get there. No use taking the tram through two stops when it was a mere four blocks to walk.

Of course, the child knew none of this.

All he knew was that, rather suddenly, his world was much, much bigger. Much, much louder. So much more alive.

And despite his fear, he wanted to learn every last little thing he possibly could about it.

Riven walked the hallways of the Institute, not a single soul in sight.  Suddenly a strong hand grabbed her throat, throwing her sideways and pinning her against the wall by her neck.

"Tell me Exile, do the murdered innocents haunt your dreams?  Do the bodies you have left in your wake make you doubt yourself?" Varus growled at her, his voice sounding more inhuman than normal.

"One day you won't be able to hide behind the League.  And on that day I will pay you back for all the people you killed." He throws her to the ground, walking away without a backwards glance.

"Enjoy your time Exile, while it lasts."
