Deaf Havana - “Sinner”
Deaf Havana may have released the most promising contender for scene bop of the summer. While leaning in more of a pop direction than previous material, this single still contains all the hallmarks of a typical Deaf Havana track – a strong, dynamic vocal delivery from frontman James Veck-Gilodi combined with honest lyrics and an unpredictable melody which takes you to unexpected places. The solid, simple and catchy chorus contrasts with the complex twists and turns of the verse. And the gospel-style vocals towards the end were a clever touch. The melody sounds like it could have come off of 2017’s All These Countless Nights but here is combined with poppier, more dance-influenced instrumentals which show Deaf Havana reaching into newer musical territory. It’s still a rock single – as “Sinner’s” killer guitar solo would argue – just one which shows that Deaf Havana understands what makes pop music so great.
