Service Leadership Programs (SLPs) Aren’t Just Another Kiwanis Club Project

The Youth-based SLPs are Kiwanis Kids (elementary school), Builders Club (middle school), and Key Club (high school). The Adult-based SLPs are CKI (college or university) and Aktion Club (adults with disabilities). Sponsoring an SLP club is more than just writing a check and assigning a member to the club.

The Kiwanis Advisor becomes a role-model and a mentor to the members. The Kiwanis Advisor is the liaison and the face of Kiwanis to the school administrators and faculty. Kiwanis SLPs serve at the pleasure of the school (or facility in the case of Aktion Club). A very real partnership exists between the school and the Kiwanis Club. If Kiwanis fails to uphold their end of the bargain, they can be asked to leave.

So what is expected of Kiwanis in this partnership? A Kiwanian is expected to be at every meeting. Not some. Not most. Every. A real SLP committee within the club makes this easier to accomplish. The Kiwanis Advisor works closely with the Faculty Advisor to create an atmosphere of service project-based learning and leadership training. Communication is a key element between the advisors. Faculty Advisors usually need to learn more about Kiwanis. Hopefully, they occasionally attend a Kiwanis meeting to get a feel for what Kiwanis is all about.

Kiwanis is required to meet with the school principal (facility administrator) once a year. Perhaps the best way is to invite the principal and the school district superintendent to a Kiwanis meeting. In lieu of that, the club president and the Kiwanis Advisor should call for a short appointment. School principals aren’t always aware of the SLP club’s projects in their own school, so be prepared to talk about the terrific SLP projects.

Kiwanis clubs are usually pretty good about inviting SLP members to help with a Kiwanis project. But more Kiwanis clubs need to be involved with SLP’s projects. It’s highly recommended to have a meeting between the Kiwanis club and SLP club leadership. The SLP officers have to be trained. Kiwanis clubs must ensure Key Club and CKI members are given the opportunity of servant leadership training beyond the club level. Ongoing leadership training is a reasonable expectation for all SLP members.

Service Leadership Programs are a club commitment. They are highly rewarding for the SLP members and the Kiwanis members. Your Kiwanis club will get out what you put into the relationship with your SLP club.

The K-Kids.

The K-Kids. Or the weird international students who have their own classes and aren't even really students here. "Do they even go here?" It may sound funny, but yes, that's us: Me, Stann, Marlene, Kylie, Laurel and Hagop, the 6 K-Kids in Clermont-Ferrand. Before I got on the airplane in Detroit on September 1st, I wasn't even sure who I was studying abroad with, thank you Margarita Winehouse.

I was only sure that I would be studying abroad with Hagop, a friend I made my freshman year when we had French class together. We had the same language lab and afterwards we usually made our way to Stacks. During our walk, the sentences of "TU ES UN CANARD!" or "JE VEUX UN SANDWICH!" could be heard yelled across the otherwise tranquil quad in horrible French accents, yes this was on purpose. So Hagop, the one friend I knew would be with me for this whirl-wind adventure. He and I ended up texting throughout most of our car rides to the airport and actually for probably the week leading up to our departure. And while anyone from our program can tell you, sometimes it's World War III between us, I still know that we're friends. So in the end, I'm still really happy that we ended up in Clermont-Ferrand together!

First person after Hagz, that I met at the airport was Kylie. I'd seen her at some of the orientation things, but didn't really know her that well. During the first week, we found out that we lived about 5 minutes from each other and we started walking to school together every day, adorable I know. But anyway from that, I'm found someone who I can definitely call my friend. We've had some great chats on the way to school, serious and funny alike and we've also had some let's say interesting nights out. Ice-skating and me falling on my ass, yup that was a good one. And I'm really glad that we've become good friend while we've been here and I know I can count on you when I need to, so I know we will definitely have more good times while we're here and also when we're back at K!

After Kylie, it was Stann and Laurel who showed up together, 10 minutes before our international plane left, good going guys, but now actually not surprising.

Stann, I knew from our first-year seminar together and also our French Lit class with Cohen in sophomore spring. We never had really hung out that much, but I still thought he was a pretty cool guy. But while we've been here, we've hung out a lot more and even though you're not always around, you're always fun to hang out with. Whether it's going to random house parties, and having that dude touch our belly buttons, or sitting at lunch with you and Marlene and just laughing our asses off, we always manage to have a great time. And it usually leaves me sore from laughing so hard. {And sidenote: we should still try working on getting into the EU, la jolie polinaise, is on it.}

So then there's Laurel. I didn't know Laurel at all before I got to the airport either, wasn't even sure what she looked like, so I was up for anything. And yes Laurel, you are quite something. Oh Laurel. If you don't know Laurel, she's kinda difficult to explain and at first I wasn't so sure what I thought about this girl. Laurel, you're kinda spacey sometimes and as you know well, Momma Bear is pretty down to earth. But over the past few months, I've really come to appreciate you as a friend and all the times we've had together. I know that whenever I want to be my silly, goofy self, I just have to find you and we're good to go. Like our photo shoot at Amboise and the night at Kylie's house. We can just be silly together!

And last but not least is Marlene. I only knew Marlene from the fact that she was an RA in Trowbridge with Hagop and Allison this past year. I didn't really know much else about her. And at first when we got here, we didn't hang out that much or talk that much about anything, but gradually we started talking more and started getting closer. Marlene, as I've already told you, you've been that person I've told everything to while I've been here. Every time, I've had a problem or somethings been wrong, you've been there to talk me through it and ask "Now, how do you feel about that?" haha just kidding. But seriously, you have been there for me and I have really and truly appreciated that friendship that we have created while being here. And you like to go shopping with me, we're set for life. 

For me, this is the part of study abroad that I've realized I've gotten probably the most out of. I've made 4 new friends while I've been here and everyone here is someone that I hope are still part of my life for years to come. We have had many laughs and good nights together and with 2 months left, I am sure there are many more to come. But in the end, I just wanna say, I love all you guys!
