Wrangler Steve led Sharon and me on a 2 1/2-hour ride through the Kodachrome Basin near Bryce Canyon, and dispensed a little cowboy wisdom along the way.
I asked him how the place got its name,
He explained that the National Geographic folks came to the area in 1948 and took a million photos. Kodachrome was the big thing then. Hence, the name.
He added: “You know, the Paiute Indians lived here for thousands of years, then the Mormons were here for 150 years. National Geographic was here for one week and named the place.”
And after a commercial brand yet ...
Sharon’s sorrel was named “Weep.” Naturally we had to ask ...
“Play any poker ...?” Steve asked. I replied that I did. Steven continued: “Well, then you know that when you have the winning hand, you lay your cards down and say, ‘Read ‘em and weep.”
My blue roan, by the way, was named Annie.
