It had been a few hours, but time moved more slowly for Harper when she was working. She had spread her materials out on an entire table in the library: occult dictionaries, ritual dissertations, ancient calendars. Everything she could find to try to solve the mystery of the baby born with organs on the outside.
Harper knew it wasn’t medical, she just knew it. It was too much of a coincidence and in her line of work, there was just no such thing. It had happened near sunrise the day the sky had been blood red, the day the writing on the sidewalk appeared. She was already working on the writing with her new partner, but she had the firm belief that in order to understand this mystery, she needed all the pieces.
Because something was coming. Something big.
In front of her, other than the pages of notes she had taken on the subject, was one book in particular: Woman Possessed. It was a book of essays written by others ranging from fellow exorcists to scientific doctors who dabbled in the occult. It was ridiculous, but she had to try something. She couldn’t just sit around and wait for an answer to fall out of the sky.
She was opened to the section about pregnancy and birth defects, furiously scribbling down notes, thoughts, anything that could help, brows furrowed in absolute concentration. When Harper got like this, she was lost to the world.
