“Of course I was scared.” He’s quick to respond, even if he’s only heard the question for less than a second. He doesn’t need to contemplate an answer, doesn’t need to hesitate - he already knows, because he thinks about it often. Now, he’s just been given a reason to say it all out loud. As he speaks, his voice is gentle. He doesn’t appear angry or annoyed. Rather, he’s a little excited. Seldom has anyone inquired about his departure and what that was like for him.

“I like to think of myself as pretty spontaneous. But, whenever I would make the decision to do something unplanned, I usually had someone around to back me up. This time, I just left on my own. I didn’t have much of a plan - I never thought I needed one. I was leaving behind the very people that used to validate all of my actions. I was leaving behind the place that fed me, sheltered me, and helped me become the man I am today. I was chasing a dream, a high... That was really stupid, but I did it. To say I wasn’t scared would be completely idiotic and untrue. I could’ve been homeless, I could’ve been hurt, I could’ve gone hungry, and I could’ve never been able to come home...”

Saying it all out loud suddenly hits him so hard. He really allowed himself to undergo all of those potential tragedies to make a name for himself in a new space. What the hell was he thinking? No one else would be so lucky. He avoided all of that, but he knows not everyone else can.

“I just handled it by not thinking about it. I’m good at that, surprisingly - not thinking. All that kept me going was what I would be doing and how I would be doing it. I didn’t think of anything else. Sometimes I forgot to sleep and eat, that’s how driven I was. But I wouldn’t advise anyone to ever do that. I don’t care how confident or excited you are. It’s not worth hurting yourself, or others... Whatever adrenaline rush you get - just remember it’s only temporary. I’ve found ways to subside that hunger - thankfully.”
