Words (and doodles) simply fail to describe how floored I was by the power and beauty flowing between the lines. This fic has it all - from a poetic stroll through an underwater paradise to a bittersweet resurrection from a watery grave, recounted in stark relief... from the terrifying thrill of encountering a god, to arguing with said god like bickering with unforgiving parents, but in a generally more sophisticated fashion, accompanied by a greater sense of appreciation for whoever stood their ground beside you and yelled back in said god-parent’s face, and a reasonably greater sense of accomplishment when both of you make it out of god-parent’s divine judgement in one piece...

Anyway tl;dr: good fic, go read!

(Also I know I was supposed to have Kaiba strip down to match the narrative. I promise I won’t hesitate to do so next time-

And the first breath Atem took of his new life was a wet, painful blurt, a mix of vomit and saltwater kicked out of his chest, splashing across his chin. He opened his eyes to a vast blue sky, as broad and air-filled as a sail, and Kaiba looming over him, dripping wet, his expression contorted with anger and fear.

Mystery Snippet Monday! [Part 3 (the finale)]

@kaibacorpintern requested #3, which is a Nerdship prompt on Roland and Hermione bonding that I’ve been sitting on for absolutely forever.

He stared blankly at the end of the hall. He had to travel via flashlight, but the light in the library was still on. Odd, but easily explainable the moment he stood in the doorway. Miss Granger was back in the library, wearing one of his boss’s Kaiba Corporation hooded sweatshirts, huddled under the blanket with the same book as before. Her wand was sitting on the end table in plain sight of the doorway, and it was clear that she used magic to turn the lights back on.

He clicked off the flashlight and checked his watch. It was at least two hours after she had originally gone to bed.

“Miss Granger?”

Hermione nearly jumped out of her skin, and he mentally kicked himself for not knocking on the doorframe first. Mokuba was this way too when he was engrossed in a game online with friends. So absorbed that you could walk up to him – right in front of him – and he wouldn’t notice you were there.

“Oh, it’s you, Roland,” she breathed, and then settled back into the couch, “I…I didn’t hear you.”

“Apologies – I didn’t mean to startle you,” he said. “I was on my way to find one of the spare laptops hiding around here, since…” he gestured wildly to the dark hallway behind him. “There’s not much else to be done at the moment.”

Hermione looked down at her book and ran a finger along the edge of the pages, and took a deep, silent breath. “I couldn’t sleep.”

“Not surprising,” he said, and watched her wince as thunder crashed over the mansion again. “Not a fan of storms, I’m guessing.”

“It’s not that,” she said softly, and scrunched up tighter under the blanket, and if he had to guess, withdrawing into Mr. Kaiba’s sweater. “I never used to mind them. They were cleansing, in a way. I used to sit in my family’s front windows as a little girl and watch the rain come down with such energy, it just washed everything away. And to go outside once it all stopped and see everything clean and bright and new, and the sun poking out among the last of the misting clouds. I loved it.”

She closed her eyes and smiled at the memory. “We had a covered porch in the first house I grew up in, and they’d let me sit out and read when the rain wasn’t blowing in towards the front door. It was so….”

Hermione paused, struggling to find the right words. “…Therapeutic, I guess.”

Another resounding boom from above, and another shudder.

“But not anymore,” Roland said plainly.

She quickly shook her head. “It’s silly,” she said and raised a hand to wipe at the corner of her eye. “And you’d think me ridiculous. It’s alright, Roland. I’m sure you have plenty of work to do. Y-you don’t have to have me hold you up.”
