New additions! I’m getting a 1:2 trio of kaiser newts sent back from the Doncaster show, I’ve been hunting for them for a while so I’m delighted. They’re critically endangered in the wild, where most of their existing habitat covers just four streams in an area under 10km² in Iran.

These three are captive bred and they have A10 CITES paperwork, as will any offspring they (hopefully) have in the future.

There are less and less newts being sold at reptile shows in the EU these days. They were never as popular as frogs, but since the dreaded Bd/amphibian chytrid fungus, not so many breeders want to run the risk of bringing their animals to big events like shows where you could shake hands with, or bump against the wrong person, then go home and wipe out your whole collection. So I’m starting to feel some pressure to collect breeding groups of all the species I want to keep while I can, as shows and international laws will continue to tighten around the captive amphibian trade. Still, hopefully it will help to limit the fungus’ spread & destruction.
