I know we all know about kakeru going "I'm also in love" and not saying who(/what) but it's implied he's fallen in love with running, but then also later he says that to him haiji IS running so it's simply haiji no matter how you slice it, but I think we also need to talk about the nighttime scene on the porch at summer training camp!!!!!! or at least, I need to talk about it, I'm sure other people already have lmao

I'm talking about how hana comes out, giving haiji a (very weak) smokescreen to ask spontaneously if kakeru has a girlfriend, and when kakeru is like Of Course Not, Why?!, haiji says "oh the starry night sky is just so beautiful" which in my opinion is very The Moon Is Beautiful Isn't It-coded, though whether that is something RwtW would reference/whether it's even a real thing is beyond the scope of my cultural knowledge, BUT EVEN IF IT'S NOT, the way he then goes on to point out a shooting star (something he directly uses to describe kakeru later in the show) really solidifies a romantic interpretation of the subtext for me. what I'm saying is, I think that that scene is where haiji really properly realized he loved kakeru. which is so sweet because it isn't a heavily dramatized cathartic moment, it's just kakeru taking the small-yet-enormous step of deciding to be vulnerable and share the thing that causes him the most shame, self-hatred, and fear of rejection.

he shares it with HAIJI FIRST do u understand. and haiji falls in love, but also receives his trust with the warmth and gravity it deserves and gives kakeru the courage to share with the rest of the team by promising him he will be safe!!!!

Don't you think it's funny cause actual canon gay characters in BL manga/manhwa will say "I love you" but only the shounen bromance can spew out some of the most romantic shit akin to a 19th century poet writing a letter expressing his surpressed love for his lover 😭.....

The “no homo…but” of sports manga/anime in particular (but a lot of shounen in general) is just so funny to me. I mean, there’s homoeroticism in all sports, but you watch sports anime and you get your main duo gazing into each other’s eyes swearing to do whatever it takes to fulfill the dream they share and it’s like, come on. A fist bump/high five might as well be the 1-to-1 substitution for the kiss that “straight” dudes can’t share on screen.
