He could hear the sounds of sirens in the distance. If he looked back, he swore that he could also see the glow of the flashing lights off the back of any reflective surface. The timing could not have been worse. For the first time in a long time he had not worn his ghoul mask in public and someone had seen his kakugan. Someone had noticed that he was a flesh eating monster. Of course the first thing that they did was call the police, their fingers could not reach the buttons fast enough.
He had known that his face was already known by the police. Kaneki Ken was someone that was written down on a wanted list, he was to be brought in if seen-- he was careless thinking that he would be safe if he kept his head down, even with a hood on. Too much time had passed without a human threat.
It was dark and the December cold pricked at his skin as he ran, he could feel the skin under his clothes itch. In an effort to get out of the situation, he ducked into the nearest alleyway, continuing down the narrow streets in between buildings. When he had gotten far enough that he knew it was safe to take a break, he slumped down, and his head fell in his lap.
If the reason was because of relief, exhaustion, or the woman’s horrified expression when she saw his eye. (Monster!) -- he was not sure -- but he had started to cry into his legs, releasing pent up tears for the first time in a long time. It was so pathetic. He scolded himself, scowling as hot salty water dripped past his mouth and he wiped it with his sleeves.
At the very least, he was comforted by the fact that no one could see him at that moment... At least he was until he heard the footsteps of a person approaching. His head shot up and he saw a young woman... He averted his eyes.
“Don’t come any closer.”
He was a monster, after all.
