Nikolai Kalmakov - Scenery study, 1915
Kalmakov was a Symbolist painter with obscure and gloomy style. Contemporaries sometimes regarded his art as "satanist" and "scandalous".
The sceneries were done in Medieval Russian style, with using of pagan Slavic motifs. For me this is a great example of re-thinking artistically ancient Russian paganism and folklore.
