Veliki Kalnik at Autumn
The Old Town of Veliki Kalnik is a complex established since the 12th century on Mount Kalnik near the village of Kalnik.
The area is inhabited from prehistoric times. The fort was first mentioned in 1243 when King Bela IV. emphasizes its importance in the fight against the Tatars. Under Kalnik, the Tatars suffered their first defeat, so Ivan Kukuljevic Sakcinski writes: "At Kalnik, the Tatars were the first to receive an unpleasant greeting from the Croats on Croatian soil." The old legend of the Kalnik plummakers prompted Šenoa to write the work 'Šljivari' and Milutin Mayer to write his historical novel 'Tatars in Croatia'.
The fortress was occupied by Hungarian-Croatian King Sigmund of Luxembourg and his wife Barbara Celjska (the "Black Queen"). The owners of the fort were nobles, bans, bishop of Zagreb, etc. Among the noble families, the most prominent are: Erdody, Drašković, Keglević, Orehovećki, Kosaće and others.
The Turks suffered defeat in Obrež Kalnički in 1565 and retreated. Since then, the population of more and more Croatian cities is at the foot of Kalnica Mountain.
The fort is located on the elevation of St. Catalina on Kalnik. Much of the former fortification is preserved today. The fortress, when completed, was dominated by the large four-quadrangle towers, which, following the thickness of the wall, could have been higher than the preserved part. This is also supported by strong support who are certainly not just decoration in this configuration. The windows are narrow in the low parts of the tower, somewhat between the window and the rifle, small semicircular lintels, while in the higher floors, perhaps furnished apartments, there are large open windows. Particularly eloquent at the Croatian level are the square towers with elections. The fort has elements of various stylistic differences from Romanesque, Gothic to Baroque. There are also the remains of the chapel of St. Catherine.
The fort is visited by numerous hikers and hikers, especially on Labor Day. It offers views of the surrounding areas on all sides. Just west, on one ridge, are the remains of the old town of Mali Kalnik.
