Leela sure has a funny relationship with orange. That color ended up being a sort of bad luck charm for Kaltha, what with her orange boyfriend and her assailant’s tacky orange suit and her killer’s orange pauldron
On the other hand, when I was designing Leela’s Mandalorian armor, I did envision some orange elements because of its connection with shereshoy, a trait Leela has embodied since her adoption. However, given that the only context in which she wore said armor was in her father’s nightmare of them being separated, one could argue it doesn’t have good connotations for Leela either
All I know is, I pictured Leela in a fully orange outfit and it just looked wrong. All the implications thereof were originally pure coincidence; orange is a common color for male Twi’leks, orange is an obnoxious color for a suit, stormtrooper squad leaders wear orange pauldrons, orange clashes with Leela’s teal skintone. I think that’s a neat little motif I stumbled into
