From Ava DuVernay’s Instagram:
Yeah uh I don’t know who needs to hear this but liek the current death toll from this pandemic in the US is over 150,000 which is a direct result of the actions of the current admistration. Ice is simultaneously gassing the centers that are housing children who have been forcibly separated from their parents, while actively concealing the number of people infected by the current virus. Federally funded secret police are kidnapping citizens in the street. This is a crisis. Please, I urge you to be responsible with your public voice.
If right now you are posting on social media about your disappointment and that it hurts ur feelings that this woman of color has currently been added to the ticket, because you “support black women, just not this one” I think you need to take a minute and evaluate the criteria you use to judge black people, Indian people and women. And why you feel this is an appropriate time to make a public statement on the issue. Racism and misogyny are the lenses that this country uses to view people through, if you believe this doesn’t apply to you I really want to know:
Were you this upset about Tim Kaine being added to the ticket in 2016? Did you publicly post about how disappointed you were at his addition? Did you publicly mock and disavow him with memes? Were you upset that he was against decriminalization of marijuana at the federal level? Did you care about him cutting taxes for billionares while he was governor of VA resulting in the 25% spike in tuition for all public universities in the state? When he supported the creation of more coal power plants against the advice of environmental activists? Did it bother you, that as the first white mayor of Richmond in a decade, Kaine supported the creation of public murals of Robert e Lee? Why wasn’t there the same non nuanced discourse about how this disqualifies him from public support?
Please, if you care about this country vote blue
The GOP has mortgaged its future to racism.
“Trump’s rise and success as a leader of the Republican party is firmly rooted in racism. To be clear, it would be wrong to conclude that all Republicans are racists (although Trump clearly believes so). But it would not be wrong to conclude that the GOP has mortgaged its future to racism, hoping that stoking racial fears will allow Republicans to achieve a final four years in power before their party collapses. On second thought, that assessment is not harsh enough. Republicans have mortgaged their souls to racism, making a losing bet that history will forget that they exploited the legacy of slavery to promote their political fortunes. They need only look to the example of Rep. John Lewis and Sheriff Bull Connor. Bull Connor permitted the KKK to firebomb a bus that was bringing the Freedom Riders—including a young John Lewis—to Birmingham. Bull Connor died a broken man, and his Wikipedia entry describes him as “an international symbol of institutional racism.” John Lewis was eulogized by three presidents and called a “new Founding Father” of a better America.
Republicans who remain mute in the face of Trump’s invocation of racism as his initial attack on Kamala Harris will be remembered as the Bull Connors of this generation. Instead of firehoses and attack dogs, they use voter suppression and the politics of racial division to strike their blows. The following is a list of all congressional Republicans who have condemned Trump’s invocation of racism to attack Kamala Harris: N/A.” – Robert Hubbell (8/13/20 newsletter, [email protected])
If you ask me people complain but do they have anyone better nope. I don’t care about her being a Attorney General, District Attorney or etc. People fail to realize she was doing a job just like people that take an oath to protect that is what she did. However she is a black women and knowing what black women have endured from being a single parent, head of household, hurt, beaten, rapes, disrespected by our own and others among etc. I WILL NOT PUT HER DOWN!!!!#kamelaharris #firstblackvp #firstblackwomenvp https://www.instagram.com/p/CDzjNgIA8zBkaBg_1h3Wk_bUABgnuFHjIIos2w0/?igshid=jzkx3m7932y3
