India Strengthens Defense Arsenal with Indigenous Loitering Munitions
New Delhi, May 2025 — India has marked a major leap in its defense capabilities with the successful induction and deployment of indigenous loitering munitions—unmanned aerial systems designed for precision strikes on high-value targets. These weapons, also known as “kamikaze drones,” have emerged as a critical component of India’s modern warfare strategy.
Leading the charge is the Nagastra-1, developed by Solar Industries in collaboration with the Economic Explosives Ltd. With a range of up to 30 kilometers in autonomous mode and 15 kilometers with real-time human control, the Nagastra-1 boasts over 75% indigenous content. In December 2024, the Indian Army received 480 units under emergency procurement—strengthening its ability to carry out surgical strikes with minimal collateral damage.
In parallel, startups like Johnnette Technologies have broken ground by securing defense contracts to supply more than 150 JM-1 loitering munitions, designed for high-altitude operations. Defense giant Tata Advanced Systems has also contributed with its ALS-50 drone, now inducted into the Indian Air Force.
These developments come amid increased tension in the region. In May 2025, during the high-profile Operation Sindoor, loitering munitions were deployed in targeted strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Defense officials described the operation as “a paradigm shift in India’s counter-terror capabilities,” enabling precise neutralization of threats without risking personnel.
India’s focus on self-reliance is evident, not just in development but also in procurement strategy. Alongside indigenous systems, India has previously acquired advanced loitering munitions like the Israeli SkyStriker, Polish Warmate, and Rafael Firefly, all aiding the transition toward a more autonomous, tech-driven military doctrine.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Defence is preparing to introduce Canister-Launched Anti-Armour Loitering Munitions (CALM) to bolster India’s armored forces. These drones will integrate with tanks and reconnaissance units to provide real-time battlefield intelligence and strike capabilities.
As India continues to balance regional deterrence and indigenous innovation, loitering munitions stand out as a symbol of its evolving military might—silent, smart, and strategic.
