"I'm not? That's news to me." Kanan moved to be more towards eye level with Jacen; it wasn't as if they could see him either way, but still. "Jedi get scared, too. We just learn to be brave, even when we're scared. You understand?"
‘ shut up. i’m n-not s-s-scared. ’

"Yeah? You're braver than I am, kid." They grinned at him for a moment before dropping their voice a little, something softer and gentler. "—It's okay to be scared, you know."

Kanan Jarrus
Once upon a time, there was a young Jedi Padawan by the name of Caleb Dume. Caleb's story ended in tragedy, like so many others, at Order 66. Or at least, that was how the story was told. But like the very phoenix legend the rebels used so often, from the ashes of young Caleb was a new figure reborn— the story of Kanan Jarrus, Jedi Knight.
Kanan had been in hiding until a chance encounter on the planet Gorse, where they met the freedom fighter Hera Syndulla. After tapping into their long dormant Force abilities to save her, they were (somewhat reluctantly) recruited into her cause against the Empire, though still keeping their abilities a secret from the rest of the galaxy.
And then years later, on Lothal, something changed. They encountered a young boy, Ezra, with an incredible gift— the same force powers they had. He was only 14; the same age Caleb had been. Remembering how much they needed that guidance back then, they decide to train him; in doing so, they embrace their old past, taking up the mantle of Jedi Knight once again.
Notes:
My Kanan is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns exclusively. They don't mind being called "dad", but other than that prefer neutral terms to masculine ones, and will correct you if you mess up.
They've had issues with hallucinations before, issues which get more pronounced once they're blinded, as they have one less sense with which to check their perceptions. These hallucinations mimic (but are distinctly different from) Force visions.
They relapsed hard on their alcohol addiction post-Malachor. They hid it from the crew at first, but were eventually found out, and had to slowly (with their help) try to break the dependency again. It takes time.
