Some thoughts on my Kanon read-through so far.
It definitely reminds me what about Key works tends to carry. That being:
Aura (music and art)
Charming character banter
Like, I didn't even feel like snarking at the whole "Nayuki's mom gets into a car crash because they really had nothing else to do in this route" thing during. I am snarking at it now but even then I do like the scene where Nayuki breaks down over it. It definitely could've used more build-up to the exact points of Nayuki's angst, but as I said, the music and art carries. So much so that it took until now for me to make fun of the fact that there is a route in this game where you fuck your cousin.
I will say, this game also very much exemplify some critiques I have of Key's child abuse writing in this era. Not even through its inclusion, but through its absence. Yuuichi does not once consider Makoto as a potential abuse victim when he assumes she's a runaway, even saying once or twice that she probably has a loving family at home. Akiko doesn't even bring up the possibility despite her much more sympathetic and tactful attitude toward Makoto.
There is a street sign in this game that has the word lolicon in roman characters. Not really surprised that's this game's target demographic tbh.
