My note I sent to the User Experience person @ Kanopy Streaming, which we got access to a couple months ago with our Toronto Public Library card...

I finally tried out Kanopy after making my account a while back. Might seem silly, but having the limited views made me hesitant to try any at all. I installed on my roku, and watched on an old CRT 4:3 TV. First thing I noticed was it wasn't old school "title safe", but over half of the roku apps I use aren't so I suppose I can't fault you on not making it supported for older viewing devices and chopping off bits on the outer edge of the UI. I selected a 3-part superhero documentary as the first thing to watch, it showed the 3 parts and I selected the first one where the cursor was. No subtitles... hmmm, switch out to the menu to find the thingy to select to turn it on... can't find it. Played it again, and tried the "*" key on my roku remote because one of my other apps uses that to get a playback menu, no dice. I go back to the menu again and think hmmm it is only showing the [CC], so maybe it is closed captioning only and not actual sub-titles so I enable that on my TV and play it again and nope, still nothing. Makes me question if any of your titles will have proper accessibility or not. Then a minute or two in, the show gives its title as "Part 3". Seriously?! Go back to the menu, zooming in to read the descriptions of each part of the 3-parter, and sure enough, from the descriptions it seems pretty obvious they are listed 1: Part 3, 2: Part 2, 3: Part 1. When browsing titles, clicking to the right was awkward. I'd get to the end of the list, and then after a delay it would load more. But not always. Couldn't tell if I needed to wait for more titles to be fetched, or if it was the end of that category or not. Going to the left, when I hit the start of the list, rather than scrolling 'around' like I expected, it brought up some menu. With the non-title safe stuff, this took me a bit to realize what happened and out to get it closed (I coudln't see that the cursour was on what I think is 'home'). At one point when browsing the titles like this, the orange underline highlight went wonky and jump from one side to the other without moving the list. A suggestion to help with the trepidation with the limited views: perhaps give a 5% grace period or something, so you can watch say up to 3 minutes of a 60minute program or so (hmmm 5% might be too much...) before it decrements your counter in case it isn't what you expected it to be. Or in my case up above, if I had decided not to continue that title when I couldn't get the closed captioning to work 10 seconds into the program, I wouldn't have wanted that mis-fire to count. This same thing was when I tried to "link" the roku... It only prompted to do the link after I had selected to play a title, and this was nerve-wracking again because I only wanted to setup the app at that point, not watch something and I wasn't sure what was going to happen after I went to the other room to link it, if I'd come back to it playing or not. So, overall, not a great first experience using Kanopy. Look forward to the service continuing to grow.
