Kansaze Dance at Resolution!
We asked emerging choreographer Rachael Nanyonjo about the motivation and inspirations behind her piece Looking Back which will preview at Resolution! 2013.
As a new choreographer you are always looking for opportunities to show your art at respected events that will introduce your work to new audiences. I formed Kansaze Dance in 2011 and next year the company will make its debut at the prestigious Resolution! showcase at the Robin Howard Theatre on January the 31st. Kansaze Dance makes dynamic and conscious contemporary dance inspired by society through experimenting and collaborating with different art forms.
Resolution 2013 features 78 new productions over 6 weeks, in nightly changing triple bills. The festival enables emerging choreographers to make the transition from vocational artist to the professional world. Created in 1989 by The Place’s former Theatre Director John Ashford the showcase has helped launch the career of many of the UK’s leading dance artists, including Wayne McGregor and Katie Prince.
Kansaze Dance shall present Looking Back, a choreography inspired by presenting the past in the present. This multimedia work reflects on memories of protests particularly The Civil Rights Movement, Dresden (2009) and the London student protests (2010). After the student protests, images of the public uniting together against an injustice led me to question how I remember other past protests. I motivated to take the audience on a journey from freedom to discontent illustrating these uprisings through dance.
