Emotions

One of many things Red is notorious for is his nearly (if not actually) flawless pokerface. Since he was young, the ravenet has tried to perfect said pokerface so that there really would be no (or next to no) emotion expressed. 

It all started off as a defense mechanism that he'd heard could be used against the bullies. Pretend you don't care, he'd been told. Pretend you don't care, and they'll leave you alone. It didn't work very well at first, of course, but over time, as his face grew more and more devoid of emotion, it did. The children even came to, somewhere deep down inside their hearts, fear him a bit (but that isn't what stopped their antics). This was indeed a good- great- thing, but there was one problem: Red's face was always expressionless. Emotions had been so far buried so long ago that it was a futile search for many when they attempted to make him show them. He never minded, though, and now it is not just a defense mechanism, but also habit, and a way to keep everyone else away.

Professor Oak

The crimson-eyed man blinked for a moment, then shrugged and began to gesture. 'Professor Oak... When I was little, he was like my grandfather, and, in a way, he still kind of is. I was always over at his house or his lab when I was younger, playing with Green or learning about pokemon. He was almost like the person who took my dad's place, I guess. ...I think I even called him "Grandpa" once or twice without meaning to before, too.' He shrugged once more at that, waving it off. 'Then after Green stopped being my friend, he was still nice to me and still told me a lot of things about pokemon. A lot of the stuff that I know now comes from him telling me, and the other things are just stuff I picked up on my own. He also helped me out a lot on my journey, and I'm grateful for that. Maybe it would've been better- a lot better- if he'd paid more attention to Green back then, but those things can't be changed now.' 

And then a small half-smile found itself on Red's face, minuscule but still very much there. 'But... He's still the professor, and I still respect him very much so. He's an important person to me, and I hope that he keeps finding more trainers to help him out with his dream, ...I should really pay him another visit sometime.'

Ash blinked as he saw a familiar black pigtails hovering in front of him, moving towards it with much haste he came across the Ice Leader of Sinnoh. "Hey Candice!" He greeted, and waved his arm in the air to make sure she caught him.

"Hmmm?" Candice craned her neck backwards, the voice sounded quite... Familiar. "Oh, Ash! Is that really you?" She grinned and turned around to face him. It had been a while since Candice had seen the young trainer. "My my, you look like you've travelled a bit since I last met you." She giggled, she'd seen Ash a bit on TV at places that she'd never even heard of. "How're you doing? Anything exciting happen?"

Expression.

Yet another thing that Red is notorious for. Or, more specifically, his lack of. Stoic and nothing close to expressive, he has an ever-present pokerface that will crack almost never. It's not something that developed only recently, though, and has been around since the beginning of his life. He'd always been a rather quiet (and rather passive) child, and so when the bullying began, that already calm face began to wear down into what would eventually become the famed emotionless face Red has now. That same face has been known to unnerve and/or intimidate some people, but that's alright with Red, and he uses it as a sort of barrier between himself and others, isolating himself and keeping everyone else away.

As for his eyes, they're also rather neutral, and more than once, they've caused the champion to come off as distant or cold to others. They're not as perfectly emotionless as his face usually is, but they're much more difficult to read in comparison to a normal person. Once (if) one gets to know Red, though, they just become easier and easier to read.

His rarely heard voice (which can't actually calm a herd of angry tauros, mind you) is also kept, for the most part, neutral. However, if something actually does affect him and his emotions, hearing his voice would be the easiest way to tell, by far. His infamous silence, however, prevents anyone from ever truly getting to know that.

When it comes to expressing his feelings or thoughts on his own, though, he's never quite been able to do that well, either. Obviously, he's not the most social butterfree alive, and he's rather awkward with others. He just doesn't know how to connect with others, or how to show them what he feels, and so it only serves to push him further and further away from others. 

All in all, expressing himself is not something Red is good at.

Duty.

Taking over the company once his father was ready to retire had always been one of his many duties. His father expected it of him, the workers expected it of him.

The clients expected it, the public expected it.

Everyone had his eyes on him whenever Devon Corporation's employees were mentioned, how he'd take over the company one day.How he had to be a role model to everyone.

Steven is used to it by now, among many other pressures, but he did not like it.It is why he enjoys not being recognized, not being talked to as if he was the one who would inherit Devon Corporation. Steven of Devon Corp. Steven Stone, son of Mr Stone.

It was why he had moved away from Rustboro (other than another reason).

And it was also why he worked so hard to become the Champion, or part of the Elite Four; other than the fact that he enjoyed battles.It was why he spent so long on his hobby, other than the fact that he loved it genuinely.

He had to get away from those expecting eyes. Not those of his father, whom he loved dearly, but everyone else.

Those who did not know him, and yet immediately burdened their expectations on him.

Sure, it was his duty, and he intended to follow through... but they didn't need to look at him as if it was his sole responsibility and his only reason to be alive.

Ash’s fear vanished as he gazed into the curiously preying eyes of red, feeling relaxed and blinked at the wave. “Ummm I’m Ash. What’s your name?”

Whatever fear or reluctance that had tinged the ravenet's eyes was now gone, and instead, the teen seemed to relax. So his name was Ash, was it? That was a name he'd never really heard of before, and so he blinked once before simply handing over his trainer card to the Kanto boy. Name: Red. Hometown: Pallet Town. While that wasn't the only information on there, it was the most important, and, once the card was taken, he simply awaited the boy's reaction.

"H-Hello...."

The sound of someone else's voice broke whatever thoughts Red had been thinking, and his stoic gaze fell upon the speaker. He was a bit shorter than him and obviously more than just one or two years younger, though he looked oddly similar to him in a way. Only in just a handful of ways, though- he was much more tanned than the champion, though, and instead of expressionless crimson orbs that matched his own, this stranger had rather expressive and warm brown ones. His own opposite and yet not- how interesting...

With a short nod, the phantom champion acknowledged the teen and gave a slight wave in greeting.
