#Repost from @kapsi1911 In recognition of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's 107th Anniversary and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity's 104th Anniversary, we would like to shine the spotlight on two Founders during the anniversary month of AKA and KAΨ. Lucy Diggs Slowe, was among a group of nine African-American women who were scholastic leaders of their classes and felt an organization for college-trained women of color, just one generation removed from slavery, was needed. The group created #AlphaKappaAlpha as the first Greek-letter Sorority established and incorporated by African-American women. She was instrumental in drafting the sorority's constitution. She also served as the chapter's first president. Slowe made an impact as an educator, creating the first junior high school in the Washington, D.C., school system and serving as its first principal in 1919 before becoming Howard University's first Dean of Women in 1922. Following her studies at Howard University, Slowe graduated from Columbia with a Master's of Arts degree. After Slowe's death, Howard University named a graduate women's residence hall, Diggs Slowe Hall in her honor. The District of Columbia honored her by naming Lucy Diggs Slowe Elementary School. Similarly, her cousin Elder Watson Diggs was one of the ten African-American men on the campus of Indiana University who endured racial hostility and decided to establish a fraternity to provide support and sanctuary. The group created #KappaAlphaPsi as the first Greek-letter Fraternity established on this campus by African-American men. He was instrumental in drafting the fraternity's constitution and he also served as the fraternity's first Grand Polemarch. Diggs was also an educator by vocation. He taught young children in a one-room school in Louisville, KY. Diggs graduated from Indiana State Normal School in 1908 and subsequently enrolled at Howard University in 1909. He subsequently transferred to #Indiana University in 1910 and was the first African-American to graduate with an AB degree from Indiana University's School of Education.
