I would recommend it.  The world building is truly one of the masterful things about that series.  We’re talking Lord of the Rings level multiple complicated societies.  And those societies and their cultures and histories matter to the plot so you kind of need to give it space to introduce them.

Hi there! Hope you're having a happy holiday. I was really interested in your discussion about BSG and Babylon 5 and decided to look into it. BSG seems easy enough to follow, having a miniseries first and then a complete series with no movies (I think). B5 is a little more complicated, with having a few movies that should be watched after specific episodes. The sites I've checked disagree on an exact order to watch it in. Can I bother you for your opinion on the best order to watch it in? Thanks

Okay... so let me give you the two competing versions of this.

Movie:  The Gathering (it’s the pilot)Season 1Season 2Season 3Season 4Movie:  In the BeginningMovie:  Third SpaceSeason 5Movie:  River of Souls

Then there is a movie that is basically the launch for the spinoff Crusade and I’d skip that and Crusade and basically everything made after the series.

So that’s the production order and there is a pretty good logic to watching it like that because it’s the kind of series that reveals things about it’s world and world building slowly.  The problem is that both the Gathering and Season 1 have a certain rough/high concept element including a lead actor (Michael O’Hare) that can be a bit wooden and difficult to connect to.  He’s replaced at the beginning of season 2 but I don’t recommend jumping into season 2 because season 1 has so much world building and set up and some really great concept use.  

The disagreement is over if you should watch In the Beginning first because it’s much more like what the show is at it’s best and what it is basically after season 1.  It’s got more action and a more relateable story than the Gathering.  So the theory goes that you’ll know what you’re getting later and are more likely to put up with the world building/set up of season 1.  It also takes place chronologically first because it’s a prequel movie.  The problem is that it will spoil a number of key plot mysteries that are slowly revealed over the course of season 1 and season 2.  Why did this war happen?  Why did the more powerful race surrender?  Of the other alien races who are more shady than they seem and who perhaps are less so...

I’d say that if you can deal with a slow build I’d watch in production order.  If you don’t mind a little spoiling In the Beginning is a really great stand alone movie.

I don't think I'll ever get over that Snow Queen scene. Especially the part where Snow is talking about how she survived and says "When you- when the Evil Queen was trying to kill me"... The way Snow immediately backtracked and separated Regina and the Evil Queen really got to me. I'm surprised by how good this show can be sometimes.

Yeah though I think that separation is a bad thing in the long run.  I also loved the look on Regina’s face when Snow mentioned loosing her father.  The complicated feelings she has about the pain Snow went through but her own pain over that marriage.

I feel like GMW got better when they stopped trying to live up to being a BMW sequel. But that's my opinion. But Riley and Maya's relationship is so sweet and they just love each other so MUCH I can't take it.

Oh, that’s legit. I’ve just started season 2, and it was the time capsule episode, so maybe I’m still in the thick of it. THEY DO THEY DO. I just love that they show reiterates every single episode how important they are to one another <3

IT IS SO DAMN REAL HOW. H O W. I really miss watching the show, it’s just like...physically painfully bad sometimes lol. But they put s2 on netflix so I’m slowly watching it because my love for rilaya is painful and deep. they’re just??? so??? married???
