karamatsu goods and oshikatsu
a lot are unfinished, but this is a very small portion of my karamatsu collection!
{{ Pssst, I saw the post about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. I'm a long-time DC fan (Raven of the Teen Titans is, in fact, a massive synpath for me), but I've rarely read anything with Kara! Do you have any recommendations? I have a probably above-average background knowledge on the Superman/Krypton story, having known someone for whom Superman was the special interest of choice, but I don't know where to start with Supergirl?
To narrow it down (because I know that's a LOT of comics history to pull recommendations from!): what would I need to read for context before I read Woman of Tomorrow?
And if for any reason it's too close to home to make recommendations, that's okay too. It's one of those things where I might get a glimpse into an important part of a friend's identity, alongside reading a good story. c:
OOH gosh this was a challenge, mainly because I have to admit most of my reading for Kara was some time ago. This actually prompted me to go revisit a few things over the last couple of days, so thank you!
The great thing about Woman of Tomorrow is that it's a very contained story! I've had friends pick it up with no context of other Supergirl media and they had no trouble. It does a beautiful job of tying in the context you might need, and especially if you've got a good grasp on Krypton and Superman already, I reckon you'll be good!
That said, here are a few recommendations for stories I personally enjoy if you want to read more (all of which are available on batcave.biz and/or readallcomics to read online for free):
Supergirl Special 2023 (a short, simple story that triggered a tiny memory(?) for me. I enjoy its take on memory and grief day-to-day, as well as the glimpse into Kara's "hero" mindset)
Supergirl: Being Super (teenage Kara years, not a canon I specifically connect with but one I enjoy for how seen my teenage self feels in it. Some things have happened in my life since I last read this which meant I spent most of the second issue crying. Also there's a spelling error in the Kryptonese in issue 2 which I think is hilarious)
Supergirl: The World (mixed bag on this collection, some aren't very good, but I highly reccommend at least the Italy issue 'Dark Reflections' and Poland issue 'Down In The Mine')
None of these impacted me quite so deeply as Woman of Tomorrow but they're absolutely good reads for getting to know/understand more about the Supergirl side of things (without having to go through the 40+ issues of a mainline comic run)
Also, if you do read Woman of Tomorrow please know I am Always down to talk about it. It's a story which managed to hit very very close to home in a lot of ways, and did so very well (in this Supergirl's opinion, anyway). Maybe some time I should do a little introspective analysis of the comic and its relevance to me re: canon...
And thank you for the understanding. Recommending things is totally fine for me but I appreciate the thought very much 💜
Thank you for the ask and happy reading!!
(P.S I haven't forgotten the fictionkin ask you sent me a while ago! I've just been very slow about getting to it, my apologies)
First supergirl episode in a while that doesn’t feel wall to wall bad and terrible. Like it’s still a bummer but I think the agent liberty storyline was the most major bummer of all time and now that we’ve broken from that it’s a little more chill. Brainy’s trying to recruit people to be on Kara’s superhero team because he’s only ever been part of the legion and he loves teaming up…. And since getting fired from the DEO Kara’s trying to be the new Superman and work alone and she hates it and she’s lowkey bad at it and she has no team…. But brainy loves her bad and wants to give her a team…..
My fireballs are powerful and induce fear in the heart of my enemies. My spells are plentiful, my arcane menagery is well maintained and my tower is both imposing and labyrinthian

A friend of mine did my makeup while I was there!
