      It wasn’t as if the ace NEEDED the pep talk, but it did help. That shadow of doubt that tried to set in was forced away by his kouhai’s words. Make them remember. He didn’t need to have the analytical mind of Oikawa. All he needed was to be him, to be the pillar of Kitagawa Daiichi, the ace that the team relied on. If he did that, nothing could go wrong. So he took in a deep breath, eyes drifted from the ball to the other end of the court. This MATTERED. This one serve told onlookers whether he was good enough to join the prestige Aoba Johsai. Up went the ball and down it came with a loud SLAP. It sailed easily over the net, hit the other side and launched off against the back wall. The speed and force was like nothing he had ever managed before; the control unlike anything he experienced before. He couldn’t help the grin spreading on his lips. If he didn’t SEEM like the type to be great, then he’d make them remember in other ways. Through brute strength he’d force his way through.

     It was his own idea to train their bodies further with sparring rather then structured volleyball practice. He knew the risks, knew the injuries he could cause. It was those dangers that caused his mother to warn him to stay away from martial arts, the fear of her son injuring his body beyond recovery was not something she wanted to experience. Yet here they were, throwing punches into training mits until their arms were sore and swings weak. It was a complete accident that his stance slipped and the other’s fist collided with the side of his face. “Yeah, yeah.. don’t worry about it.” It hurt, his nose was bleeding, his jaw felt knocked out of place; but he ACTED fine, or as fine as he could be. “We should take a break.”

     The ace can only stare in the other’s direction for a moment. Maybe he DIDN’T have to deal with everything alone, but it sure felt like he did. It felt like it was his job to put the world on his shoulders, to carry his team across the finish line whilst they did all they could to stay atop. He was the pillar, a title that came with so much responsibility that he often felt the weight of it dragging him down. “Mhm.” It’s not much of a response, but there’s hardly anything else he CAN say. Putting that kind of pressure on his underclassman just wasn’t his style. So he picks up in a ball and serves. Better to keep practicing then dwelling on his messy thoughts.

Asahi bites back the immediate protest that rises to his lips, knowing that Kageyama is just trying to help and it’s not his fault that Asahi allowed him to notice something was wrong in the first place. He’s fairly good at hiding the worst of it by now, keeping it under wraps so nobody else has to deal with it, and normally outside Daichi and Suga nobody has to be the wiser that there’s something going on in the first place-

But, well, this time it was the young setter who had managed to notice, and he was starting to realize maybe he was having a worse day that he thought, if it was so obvious. He glances down at his hands, wincing when he notices their trembling and immediately tucks them behind his back, as if that would simply make the problem go away.

“I-I’m fine, really, thank you for you concern but, ah...” He pauses, giving the other boy a little smile. “I’ll be okay, you can go back.”
