Synopsis: A fictionalized telling of the story of Philip Zimbardo’s controversial 1971 psychology experiment. Male Stanford students volunteer for a study in which they’re sorted into guards and prisoners and left to their own devices; though the groups are decided by a coin toss, the guards (including Karl) are told they were selected for their personality attributes. The guards immediately abuse their power, and within days the abuse becomes too much for some of the prisoners to handle. Ezra Miller and Michael Angarano also appear once again.
Thoughts: the seventies aesthetic in this was so strong, they really went in on it and it was great. very fun to see this experiment portrayed, i remember being fascinated by it when learning about it in classes? it doesn’t say things about humanity, just about what happens when you lock a bunch of Stanford boys in a basement together. Nick’s casting here added some interesting depth as Guy Who Is Kind Of Pathetic Looking but then puts on a guard uniform and becomes as cruel as the other ones. however, please do not put a mustache on this man again.
