She poured the hot water into the mugs, waiting for the water to pull the tea from the bags. She waited, like they’d been doing all morning. When Sirius appeared beside her suddenly, she couldn’t help but flinch. Merlin, she was more on edge than she realised,

“You can’t solve everything with tea, Evans.” Sirius said, watching as she stirred each of the mugs absently.

“I’m British, of course I can.” She replied quietly, handing him one of the mugs. The five of them were crammed into Sirius’ tiny flat, awaiting their results, and the tension was palpable. James had snapped at Peter earlier for eating crisps too loudly, ‘It sounds like you’re chewing on leaves, Pete! Just keep your sodding mouth closed when you chew!’ and more concerning that that, Remus hadn’t said anything for the past hour. Sirius and Peter had been playing chess, much to James’ dismay (the sound of cracking pieces was unnerving, to say the least), and Lily had made so much tea that her stomach had started to ache.

“Are you sure it was today?” Sirius groaned, looking up from the chessboard towards Remus.

“It’s the fifth today, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, but-”

“Then it’s today.”

“So, why is it taking so fucking long?”

No one knew the answer, so the room fell silent once more.

“They’re here.” James said a while later, breaking the tension finally. There was a soft tapping on the window. Lily placed her (now cold) tea down and cross the room to let the large barn owl in. It flew towards the coffee table in the middle of the room, and dropped a stack of letters with a clatter. It picked up one of the biscuits from the table and flew off out the window once more, causing Sirius to mutter bitterly as he stood up and slammed the window after it,

“Cheeky prick, stealing my biscuits like it owns the place-”

“Shut up, Black.” Lily said as she pushed past him and towards the neat stack of letters tied together with red string. She looked up at James, who nodded. Kneeling down in front of the coffee table, she undid the string and handed Peter his letter, then Remus’ and Sirius’, leaving only hers and James’ in her hands. She sat down beside James once again, and gave him the letter with his name on the front. The others opened their letters and read through their results; sighs of relief in places and grunts of indignation in others. Only James appeared to be in no rush to open his own,

“Does it matter?” He asked Lily quietly. Her finger had been beneath the wax seal, about to break it open, when his voice interrupted her.

“Does what matter?”

“These results.”

“In the grand scheme of it all, I suppose not.”

“We could leave, y’know.”

“Leave Sirius’ flat?”

“No. Leave Britain. Leave Europe.”

“Where would we go?”

“Does it matter?” James asked, “You’d be safe and N.E.W.T’s wouldn’t matter.”

Her heart ached at that. He was scared, they all were. They were on the edge of war, and all they could do was wait. There'd been rumours of a rebellion, of a secret organisation, one that would be responsible for fighting in the war, should the Ministry fail. That's all the Order of the Phoenix as far as the five of them were concerned, just rumours. Part of her knew that her N.E.W.T results didn't really mean much anymore, that in the long run an 'O' in Potions wouldn't stop a killing curse. Lily knew he wouldn't run though, for all James' flaws, he was a Gryffindor through and through, brave to his very core.

“I’m safe here,” She said, cupping his cheek gently, “Here with you, I’m safe and N.E.W.T’s don’t matter, I promise.” She spoke softly before she rested her forehead against his. That seemed to calm him, for when she pulled back, his fingers began to shakily open the envelope. Breaking the wax seal and pulling out the stack of papers that would inevitably decide her future career, she tried her best to stop her own fingers from trembling.

As Lily unfolded the results, a much smaller piece of parchment folded in four fell into her lap. Intrigued, she picked it up and opened it, and even unfolded it was no larger than the palm of her hand. It contained no results, no names, and no mention of Hogwarts. All it had was an address, a date and a time, with Dumbledore’s signature at the bottom. The parchment had a simple symbol in the top right hand corner, comprised of the letters ‘OOTP’, and a thin banner below with the words ‘ut resurgat’.

“Rise,” Lily whispered under her breath. She lifted her head weakly - having totally forgotten about her N.E.W.T’s in her lap – and looked at the others, all wearing similar expressions to her own, holding identical pieces of parchment in their hands, “What does it mean?”

“It means that the Order of the Phoenix has risen,” James said, running a hand through his hair, “And we just got our invitations to the party.”
