The village of Marmari and two settlements were evacuated early Monday morning after a large fire broke out in the early morning hours in area of Karystos on the southern part of the island of Evia. The fire started at 2:30 in the morning increasing suspicion on arson.
Strong winds blowing with intensity of over Beaufort spread the blaze quickly.
Firefighters rushed to the area and aerial means joined the operation by the first light of the day.
There are currently 64 firefighters with 26 vehicles, 1 group on foot, 9 helicopters and one aircraft operating in the area with the assistance of volunteer firefighters as well as water tanks provided by the municipality.
However, strong winds blowing with 5 Beaufort and guts up 7 Β and in the area are making the work of the fire brigade more difficult.

Archaeologists uncovered a settlement in southern Evia, believed to date from the 6th century B.C. the Greek ministry of Culture announced on Tuesday.
There’s not all that much information in this short article, but what interested me about it is the mention at the end that the town seemed to have a population of craftsmen. I wonder if there’s a site yet to be found at which the craftsmen worked. Reminds me a bit of Deir el Medina in Egypt, although much later.
Ancient Settlement Uncovered on Greece’s Evia Island
The Greek Ministry of Culture announced on Tuesday that archaeologists have recently uncovered an ancient settlement on southern Evia, believed to date from the 6th century BC.
The remains of the ancient settlement, discovered near the town of Karystos, are located in a naturally fortified position as they occupy a section of a rocky hilltop.
According to the ministry announcement, the the architectural remains extend to 46 meters (151 feet) long and 22 meters (72 feet) wide, while the total area of the settlement is thought to be approximately one acre. Read more.
