Next month, the Kataang crowd over on Twitter/X will be hosting the first (hopefully annual!) Kataang Winter Bash.

If you have an account there, you can feel free to play along there. Otherwise, I know that while we're not the ones running it, us tumblr folk would always love to see more Kataang-y goodness! Tag it with #kataang winter bash and/or #kataangtag and I'll try and reblog what I find!

The Southern Water Tribe docks were loud today in a way that did the soul good. The sounds that echoed weren’t the sharp, urgent noise of battle or the strained quiet of places waiting to be attacked. Instead there was laughter. Shouts of recognition. Boots pounding as people ran instead of marched. The air smelled of salt and smoke and something warm being cooked nearby, and for a moment Aang just hovered there, letting it all wash over him. Homecomings were often happy chaos, and the arrival of Hakoda, his crew, and his children back to their village was no exception.

Kataang Winter Bash

Happy 2026, Kataangers! Mod Cabby here. We're getting so close to the date for the winter bash that had been initially announced by dailykataang over on X/Twitter. Unfortunately, life came at them sideways and they had to quietly step back from hosting that event. However, I am hopeful that we can pull off a Kataang winter miracle and still get a bit of Kataang-y goodness out. They've already done all the hard work for me: dates are chosen, prompts are settled on, and this lovely graphic is already made. So all that's left is to hype it and see what fun Kataang content we can get the year rolling with!

What is the Kataang Winter Bash?

A four-day event brand new this year that gives us some wonderful Kataang content to warm our chilly winter days (or to enjoy in the air-conditioning, if you live where your January is already plenty warm. Ha!) It will run from Jan. 15-18, 2026.

How do I participate?

The most common ways to participate are by creating art or writing a fic and posting it online. Some people try and create something for every day while others only fill one or two prompts.  Most days have multiple prompt ideas. Feel free to select your favorite, or to combine as many as you'd like. As always, we want to reassure you that it’s perfectly okay not to do every prompt! We just hope to have lovely pieces to share on each day.

But I can’t draw or write!

That’s totally fine - there are more ways to participate! You can sing a song, bake some goodies, create jewelry inspired by the prompts - just about anything really. And of course, you can also show your support by reblogging and liking other people’s contributions.

How should I tag my work?

The easiest way for us to find your work so we can reblog it to this blog is by using the tag “kataang winter bash”. Using “kataangtag” can also help. You must tag one of these in your first five tags otherwise it doesn’t appear in the search. It is also helpful to tag us directly with @kataang-week.

Sometimes even properly tagged posts may not appear when we search the tags, so if you do not see your content reblogged, please let us know.

Once we’ve reblogged it to this blog we add our own tags (a prompt tag and a user tag) for easy organization. This means we can find all the work for one prompt or all the work from one user in one easy click.

Can I post my stuff other places online too?

Uh, absolutely! Details of this event will be shared on the Kataang Discord server as well as on the kataangst subreddit, and hopefully the talented creators on X/Twitter will also be able to join in.

One final note

I realize this is much shorter notice than we give for events such as our Kataang Week, and as such it may be tougher to get works completed in time. I'll absolutely reblog anything posted late (anytime in January or February) just to give ample time. As mentioned before, there was unavoidable circumstances that led to dailykataang on X no longer being able to host the event, so in the future I'm sure additional Winter Bashes will have ample lead up time. :) For now, I'm going to dedicate this event to dailykataang (and all the other amazing Kataangers on X), who really did lead the charge in getting this event rolling. I'm just riding the coattails of all the work they got done way back in the fall. :)

Winter Bash Update & Summer...

Greetings everyone! 

First of all, I would like to apologize for how long it has taken me to post this update (unfortunately, real life kept Mod Atarah and I from this blog as the KWB wrapped up last month).  Second, I hope everyone had a lovely holiday season, big or small. 

Third, while I am hesitant to label the KWB as a ‘failure,’ to the best of my knowledge, there were only 3 official submissions between 2 users.  Even if you include the art created to promote the event and the unofficial submission I just reblogged, we’re still left with under 10 entries and about 5 users. 

There were many users - myself included - who posted about working on entries, but never posted anything.  If you still want to post anything for the Kataang Winter Bash, please do so! (I plan on doing so!) Or if we have missed any posts, please let us know so we can reblog them!

Feel free to drop an ask or message one of the mods with your opinion of the Kataang Winter Bash and if you feel we should continue it in the future or not. 

Lastly, I would like to thank everyone who participated, promoted, and helped celebrate the Kataang Winter Bash, despite how small it was. 

It might only be February, but work on this summer’s Kataang Week will begin soon.  By the end of this month or early March, prompt submission will be opened for Kataang Week 2017.  So start thinking of ideas and mark your calendars for the end of July!
