34. A kiss to pretend.

(This one got a bit. Dark. But! A perfect 300 word drabble)

"You said you didn't want a statue, but Demacian stubbornness seems to always prevail."

Katarina looked up at the marble likeness of Lux, lifelike but lacking life; the perfectly combed hairs that do not sway in the wind, the perfectly chiselled hands that bear not a single scar, and the perfectly sculptured face lacking that infectious smile. It was perfect—if you didn't know her, that is. A hero captured in stone, elevated through her deeds despite her nature; Demacia could never allow her her blemishes.

But to Katarina, those were everything.

"I wonder what went through your mind when they unveiled it. Were you pouting? Staring daggers at the back of your aunt's neck?"

The wind gently pulled at the branches above them.

"I wonder what you're thinking right now. I'm not used to you being so silent, you know?"

Katarina leaned against Lux and closed her eyes. She listened; the leaves rustling around them, fire crackling in the braziers lighting up the path, far in the distance steel armour rattling along to the beat of hooves rhythmically running over smooth stone. Sounds of life were all around her.

But not the ones she longed to hear.

No steady breath being drawn, no beating of the heart, not even a whispered nothing.

Lux' lips were cold when Katarina pressed a gentle kiss upon them.

"Don't be mad, but I-," her voice cracked. "I'm glad they built you a statue. Makes it easier to pretend."

Like everything was covered in thick, black tar, that is how Katarina felt ever since… ever since that night. The poisoned dagger had been meant for her, the blood spilled to be hers alone, but Lux had always been heroic to a fault.

"But I wish I didn't have to, Lux. I- I miss you. *
