“Dom, my next door neighbor, brought over stuffed mushrooms I’d borrowed his oven for, holding the baking dish in a snowy-white dish towel carefully away from his brown polyester Sansbelt.”
1 lP pg 13, Chapter 2 of The Picker Who Perished by Kate Holmes
.
While I respect Holmes’s flowery descriptions of outfits and decorem is wonderful, this was my favorite line.
Then… I lost interest when I realized that lol
I just wished her dialogue wasn’t the equivlaent of what suburban folks talking at a BBQ.
For instance, they call this one gal “Evil Thalia,” no interesting story, she’s just an asshole. There’s so much missed potential!
Why not ham it up? Make Evil Thalia really into like tricking people into buying fake frogs?? Cuz she’s like a poacher! Idk what scary shit would be for suburb people.
Either way, it’s a shame, book had quite a bit of potential since she weaves a beautiful atmosphere and setting, but the characters feel too cardboard cut out.
