Almost unconscious in her movements, Kate found herself mirroring his, her body shifting in her desk chair, hovering slightly as she leaned in close, lips only a breath apart from him, much too close for the watchful eyes of the rest of the Precinct. “I don’t recall there being a rule-book about how to celebrate Christmas?” she murmured, only just managing to get the words past her lips, her heart picking up at the proximity. Hyper aware that she should pull back, her eyes danced with amusement as they dipped slightly, lingering on his lips, a brow arching before she tore her gaze away from him, quickly collecting herself and shifting back into a more work ready position.
But if she thought she’d managed to calm the stuttering heart in her chest, she only felt it pick up further when the offer left his lips, warmth circulating, heating up her cheeks. “Oh..” she swallowed around the syllable, her brows pulling together as she let her gaze drop from his, her short hair barely skimming her jawline doing little to cover her face. She knew she shouldn’t be surprised, Castle was always inviting her over, trying to involve her in his world as much as he possibly could, scratching for the tiniest opening she might give him and the idea of carving pumpkins with Castle and his daughter was almost too much for Kate to picture, too sweet an image in her head. She actually had to stop herself from jumping at the offer, at the idea, knowing that left to her own devices she’d only take on the night shift, allow other detectives to celebrate Halloween with their families, more at home with the ghastly, rather than the sugary treats.
She gave herself a moment of contemplation as she shifted to rest her chin upon her palm in an attempt to hide the slightest smile behind her hand. Really, Kate couldn’t help herself; the childish joy he was getting from his own explanation written all over his face, eyes twinkling, crinkling at the corners and she omitted an answer, choosing to defer. “They explode…” she repeated, her eyes narrowing at him, “I don’t know. I picture me being the butt of a lot of pranks.. make that attempted pranks. I wouldn’t want to intrude on you and Alexis.”
He laughed out loud when she worried about being on the receiving end of pranks. “Well, what is Halloween without pranks? I mean, it’s not like April Fools’ but it’s called trick or treat for a reason right?” He shook his head, holding up his hand as he silenced her worry about him and Alexis’ time together. “She’s had to put up with me for fifteen years, I think she’d welcome company that isn’t me or my mother. Besides, she likes you. She thinks of you like a big sister... or something,” he told her, muttering the last two words. “I mean, she looks up to you. She likes having a woman around, one that doesn’t try to buy her affections with extravagant shopping trips whenever she manages to make it to town.” He couldn’t swallow down the slight venom in his voice when he talked about Meredith. “And you know how my mother is. My point is, she would never complain about you being around. And neither would I.”
